CEL?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

CEL?

Post by garfield3887 » Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:11 pm

Ok, I changed my water pump today, put everything back together, car runs fine... but... my CEL is on now... so I took it to the parts store to have the code read... but there was no code... I had the battery disconnected while I was working on it. I brought it home and reset it again and the CEL came back on in about a minute... wtf would make it come on? I don't think I broke anything while jacking it up and down... timing belt looked good... tension seemed good... alt might need a little slack on it cause there's a little "squeak or chirp" when I rev it... I dunno what's up!

maybe the timing is off? but then it wouldn't run that well/at all

My timing was off a tooth, no code, ran/idled fine except at high RPMs

The ecu will throw a code if it's off 7* or more (2 teeth) unless your ECU is finicky then 1 tooth could make or break.

but that's all speculation. try the 'key dance': without starting the car cycle the key on off on off on and a P xxxx code should come up on the Odo (xs are numbers) post it here or look it up on the corresponding thread viewtopic.php?t=11307

hmm... I could have swore the timing belt was spot on, if even but maybe 1 tooth off... i know it was 1 tooth off when i removed the old one.

I've noticed after driving it a bit, even though it runs and drives fine, there is a *whirrrrrrrrr* sound kinda like a small vacuum, or turbo sound, or a little jet engine coming from that side of the engine now.

I've not had much luck with the on off on off on off method to pull a code... but i'll give it a shot...

P 1390(M) Timing Belt Skipped 1 Tooth or More Relationshipbetween Cam and Cranksignals notcorrect.

That's the code it gave me... Just great... I wasn't looking forward to tearing that down again since it took me 6 hours today... Back to the grindstone i guess...

Yep, thought so. I hope your valves are ok since it is a Close Interference engine

If he's been driving around, I'm sure the valves are still fine.

Once you set the marks, turn it by hand two complete revolutions, and recheck.
