Transmission Driving me crazy

Post by DoubtedNeon » Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:38 pm

Yo guys, as you know I have a SE with a 2001 manual transmission (cable clutch). this thing has about 150,000 miles on it i think, but used to run great, now randomly I cant get the thing to shift into gear. Its completly random, sometimes it will shift just fine, and sometimes I have to force it into 1st or second. I dont know what the problem could be, but i added a qt. this morning of atf+4 fluid.

any ideas? Am i gonna need a rebuild? whats it gonna cost me?

try changing out that shitty atf+4 first for something better like redline, mobile 1 10w-30 HM, royal purple syncromax, pennzoil sycromesh.

tranny driving me crazy

Yup, dump the atf+4 first of all. Mobil 1  . Mine did the same as yours on an intermittent basis. Have you checked the shifter bushings and adjusted the crossover? You can find how to adjust it in the Haynes manual or fsm, simple to do. How old is the clutch? Worst case scenerio it could be worn out or have bent clutch fingers. Not saying any of this is what is wrong, but a good place to start. Oh, does it grind between gears? If so it is most likely the synchros in the tranny.

u gotta tell me how to adjust this "crossover" cuz ive never touched it.

also we just put shitty off brand stuff in there, idk what is really wrong with this thing, but i need some stuff to try, PLEASE help me, I noticed tonight that if I dont push the clutch all the way down it actually enguages better, I kinda have to "find the gear" by pushing the clutch in or out....

ideas?

I'd say trans flush with some good stuff. Then, adjust the clutch pedal and the bushings. If that doesnt solve it then it must be the clutch itself.

the crossover adjustment is under the console. WARNING: DO NOT attempt this if your shifter bushings are bad! Very bad things can happen! Remove shift knob. Take out the 2 screws in the front cupholders after pulling the parking brake up all the way. Then take out the 4 screws in the bottom of the storage compartment. Pull up and back on the console to loosen it then work it over the brake handle. On the driver side of the linkage is a bolt, 10mm I think or 8mm. That is where you adjust it. Under the hood take out the battery and tray to access the shift linkage on top of the trans. In one of the linkages is a hole and a corresponding hole in the trans case. line the holes up and insert a 1/4 inch drill bit into the case thru the linkage. Since the trans will be in neutral, loosen the bolt under the stick, on the driver side. DO NOT move the stick from the neutral position! Tighten the bolt as it should self adjust, mine did anyway. Take out the drill bit and assemble in the reverse order.
