Must have droid apps?

Post by kornholio788 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 12:53 pm

So I picked up a Droid 2 yesterday. Jesus christ this thing can do anything. But I am wondering this. I am completely new to the whole smart phone thing. This is my first(big jump eh? lol).

So what are the MUST have apps to down load? The must have widgets. And what are some of the best looking home pages to set up?

I got this phone as I recently became a manager at a huge bar/grill. And def needed a more high tech phone to keep notes, calender dates, meetings, etc.

But this thing can do WAY more. So let me hear them!

Astro file manager: So you can browse to where you put stuff and install it.

Barcode scanner: Scans barcodes so you can order shit.

DroidLight: Lights up the flash on the back of the phone (I assume D2 has it?) so you can use it in dark areas like a flashlight.

Handcent SMS: Because the stock texting app kind of sucks.

Qik: For posting videos to the web (also need a Qik.com account, but it's free)

I have an HTC Aria.

I only use like 2 apps on a regular basis. One being Facebook, the other being Pandora.

I have a DisneyWorld App so I can see the wait times at each park when I'm up there. (Annual Pass holder)

When ever the Napster App goes live for the Android, I will switch to that over Pandora.

Other apps that I have but never use

NHL Feed
ESPN Score Center
IMDb
Zedge

I guess I'm just boring when it comes to my phone, I really don't see the value in a lot of the apps that are out there.

barcode scanner - like said before.
Bump - quick contact exchange
google Earth - if you dont know what that is....sorry
file manager - lets you see all the files on device as well as edit them and add them (lets you make different sounds for the notification sounds for the HTC Evo)
Google Goggles - take a picture of stuff and Google will tell you what it is. (probably my favorite)
Google Sky maps - shows the constellations
Key ring - makes a scannable picture of all your customer loyalty program cards so you don't have to carry them on your key ring.
Movies - show times and reviews of movies in the theater.
Pandora
ESPN scorecenter
urbanspoon - helps you find places to eat and shows reviews/address/phone number
The weather channel

and thats about it for now.

DO NOT get task killer apps! They are a complete waste of time, and actually do more harm than good. The Android software is designed for programs to run in the background, so killing them makes the system slower when you want to open them. If you're running these, get rid of them.

I have read actual proof that it does not extend the battery life and does nothing good for the phone.

Thanks for all the tips. Always more and more digging to do with this phone. Settings to change and such.

Got my main home screen set up nicely. Really clean. And working on my other 6 home screens at the moment. But all these apps are really helpful.

Any other ones? What is your guys favorite music player? I am using my droid as my mp3 player and selling off my zunes. So I want a good media player to use.

The native Droid one is pretty good, Just says music. Music downloaded lite, imusic, and fildo will scour the interweb for the music you want to download too

The best "music player" I have found is DoubleTwist. Personally, I hate the stock music app, if only because it automatically starts playing the first song when you click on a playlist.

For music streaming I use SubSonic. It requires a 15 dollar donation after 30 days, but it will allow you to stream your own music directly from your computer at home.

Ill pm it to you.

Oh, Dan. Also try a program called locale if you're worried about your phone ringing while you're at work.

Basically you set up scenarios with how the phone should react. For example when the phone sees you are at work (via GPS) it will shut down all ringers, turn off wifi etc so you don't get in shit with your personal phone going off.

Then when Locale sees that you are at home, it'll turn the ringers and wifi and everything back on, etc.

Very nifty program as I always forget to put my phone on vibrate at work!

As others mentioned:
Google Googles
Barcode scanner
WiFi Tether - turns phone into a secure WiFi router
SetCPU - Overclock/Underclock the cpu
File Manager 2.1
Advanced Task Killer 1.9.3

Cyanogen had a stable rom for the HERO, seems to work really well or at least has been for a few weeks now. I was also looking for Froyo 2.2 and it would not be released for the hero

Go into the stock messaging app and disable it from notifying you of a new message. Should be in the options of the app.

If you have 2.2. It helped quite a bit with 2.1 for me.

I don't have time to run through what people have listed so I'll just list one's on mine that I find most useful.

2.1 was written the same basic way that 2.2 is, so no... no it didn't.
