I think I need a new clutch ...
I think that I may need a new clutch sadly
This is the second time in two weeks that I have smelled my clutch burning. Is this a tell tail sign of it going? I have had the car for the last 75k miles and this is the first time this kind of thing has happened to me.

Is it slipping in 5th gear when you give it gas? Is the fluid level correct? Or cable adjusted if you have a 2000...
You should put the year/trim level and transaxle type in your sig for future reference.
Moved it to the correct section for ya. Noobie!

Lol thanks, Sorry.
Its a 2001 base (slowly getting it to an SXT) MTX.
No slipping as far as I can tell. I haven't noticed anything major except getting into first and reverse sometime takes a little extra force. I have read the how to on adjusting the clutch cable, but I don't know if this will help or not. I suppose I could give it a shot and see if I smell it again...
I hope I can get this fixed cheap I had so many great plans for this car now that I have a good job

I will give that a shot after work and let everyone know of the results. Thanks I didn't really know how to test for it other than driving it (I know a lot more on the electronics side of troubleshooting...).Fuzzyneon wrote:if you shift from second gear like 3k-4k right to 5th and gun it do the rpms slip"" like climb ? kinda a generic trick to see if a clutch is slipping but it worked for me.

i was worried my old clutch was giving out and a friend told me to do this it kinda makes sence since if your rpms move to quick when put into 5th its not holding itself.would check all ajustments and stuff to!Dabuh wrote:I will give that a shot after work and let everyone know of the results. Yours doesn't have the cable. Only 2000 model year, and older.
Trouble getting it into 1st, or reverse might mean it is not fully releasing. You cold adjust the pedal first to see if it helps. You will want to loosen the screw under there, and pull the pedal back, and tighten the screw. This will push the slave farther, helping to release the clutch more. The burning may be it constantly dragging, instead of fully disengaging.

That is exactly what I was thinking. When you say pull the pedal back I assume you mean towards the drivers seat (thats all that makes sense to me). If it is hydraulic then the height of the pedal will still matter? I thought I read a how to on here about adjusting the height that said it didn't matteroccasional demons wrote:Yours doesn't have the cable. Only 2000 model year, and older.

I will dig into this tonight also I have the Haynes repair manual so I should be able to find where to check this stuff.occasional demons wrote:Is it slipping in 5th gear when you give it gas? Is the fluid level correct? Or cable adjusted if you have a 2000...

viewtopic.php?t=26jonnymopar wrote:The small bolt that you use to adjust is the bolt that connects the clutch pedal to the clutch cylinder. Therefore, it does absolutely nothing as far as how your clutch engages. As said before, the only thing it affects is how far the clutch disengages when the pedal is on the floor.
Yes back towards the seat. This will give the master cylinder more travel, in turn pushing the slave farther, etc., etc. You may want to check the pivot also, to be sure it isn't bending, ie, getting ready to fail.

Alright I did everything. I adjusted that clutch (it was pretty much all the way up anyway) I checked the fluid, that was normal. The pivot looks good also, its nice and sturdy although I like that metal one in the picture
I did some other looking into the rest of the car because I have kind of neglected the engine compartment this summer (two jobs 7 days a week). I was very very low on coolant, which was probably the cause of the smell... My bushings on the trans no longer exist, obviously why I was not getting into reverse and 1st easily.
I took it for a ride on the same route I went yesterday and things seemed fine until I got home and had the smell again, but this was before I realized the coolant was low. I think I am going to need to go for a longer ride tomorrow, I let it run for about 15min after adding the coolant and the smell seemed to have dissipated. What really is strange is that my car barely ran hotter with this little coolant. It was always just below the first line today it was just above the first line.
One last thing I found in the engine bay which was weird. There was a wire just hanging out and I found where it plugged into which was on a black box on the back of the engine, I am thinking maybe its the knock sensor but I'm not sure.
I will update this tomorrow with the results of a longer drive. I linked the pictures of that wire that was just hanging out behind the engine and also of the bushings.

That is just a capacitor to reduce the signal noise from the injectors etc.
And you posted the same pic. But it doesn't matter, just get some Booger Bushings, and that problem will be cured.

Well few days later, here's an update. The smell came back after all of the changes I made on Sunday with some minor driving (nothing on the way home). My drive to work on Monday had some pretty terrible traffic so I am surprised the smell did not return. Not sure whats going on with it but I think I am just going to keep my nose on it...
I did order the bushings, those should be in soon and I look forward to that.
As far as that capacitor, would this be what was causing such bad engine noise in my sound system? It doesn't seem to be because I went a day without any noise then the next it was awful. So unless it came unplugged again I don't think thats it.

One last update
I have installed the booger bushings, man are these things amazing! I've been driving for the last week or so an no smell has made its way into my cabin but sometimes I get a small whiff out of the engine after I get out of the car. I am not to worried about it anymore because I found a melted wire from the previous owner who had after market fog lights installed (i think this was the burning smell to be honest) and a melting wire on the engine would fit the time frame symptoms perfectly. I have since removed the wire and I think all is well.
I know I said this already but thanks everyone you have all been a huge help/warm welcome!
