New Hood

Post by SXTwolfe » Fri Oct 08, 2010 9:43 am

Just wondering where is everyone finding the hoods with the hood scoops? is there a specific place online that has decent deals? just getting opinions. have looked around but this was what i found

http://www.modernperformance.com/carbon ... -1294.html dont have anywhere near this kind of money lol

and most others are within this spectrum of price. dont really need carbon fiber not a fan of the look of it. has anyone posted a tutorial about creating a scoop out of your current hood? i have heard of it being done before?

1. yeah its expensive.
2. thats the price before shpping so add like another $150 tothat price.
3. yes theres a guy that is currently making a custom fiberglass hood out of a srt4 hood without the scoop into the hood. but he is having a lil trouble. lets just say itll be a while before he is done.& i doubt he is going to go into production wit it.

you could always try ebay for a hood. but when it comes to hoods. your going to have to search either Ebay or the Forum for a good deal. they are always in the $300 range anyways. if you find a carbon fiber 1 you can alwas have it painted to match the car.

Having a scoop cut/welded/riveted and blended onto your existing hood, and looking decent is going to cost as much as/more than a pre made one. Unless you can do the work yourself, and even then there are the materials costs. Ceritfit sells hoods for around $50, if you need something to practice on. ;)

Get a hood, cut a hole in it, stick on a hood scoop, fiberglass over the edges, enjoy your new budget SRT hood and the steaming engine whenever it rains.

I thought about it once... way way back when I owned a Civic...

Meh, I did it to my Omni. More of a cowl type tho. The air going beneath the car still makes enough vacuum to pull air in until around 70 mph. That's when the snow would stop doing a 180 into the opening.

But it wasn't pretty. :P

It did help keep the temps down tho, as that 2.2 liked to run hot, no matter what I did. As most ppl know that had them, heat and those crappy heads didn't mix well. So it wasn't rice by choice, it was more self preservation of my wallet.

But if it is done so it flows well with the car, and with some skilled input, I wouldn't call it rice.

here's my rice-y version.... an experiment... am looking for a new hood anyway, hopefully a SRT..

yea, it was a stick on... actually didn't even have an opening in the front..cut that out and actually opened up a couple holes in the hood itself so it was functional...tried to mold it in

...like I said, looking for a good deal on a new hood..and getting some cash together... didn't notice any kind of big drop on a stock temp gauge when driving with it...but we all know they aren't very accurate

lol honestly was not expecting this many people to respond, but then again this is why we ask questions. most likely if i i were to end up doing it would go the way of prebuit. technically i could do it myself but it has been a long time since i have done anything like that. thank you all for the replies just trying to figure something out to do with the hood lol

The cooling for the neons is pretty good, so I doubt you would even see a drop in engine temp with no hood. The t'stat is going to keep it constant. A better measure would be the ambient under hood temp. You might see a drop there. Might see a degree or two drop in intake temps if you are lucky. Boosted apps would benefit more, getting some of the snail heat flushed out.

I wish I was old lol. I hear my dad talk about the 2.2 motors all the time and how he loved his shadow. I just want to drive that dam thing.

Or atleast get our GLHS fixed and drive it

i think i was one of the first to mold a suby hood scoop in, but i could be wrong....

pics

molded into the hood, cut out to keep the turbo cool, i did notice temp being low to my turbo, it was well worth it in my case..... but now i would love to own an ipp hood.... but i am sure that will not happen... lol

well we will see what happens. thank you all for the replies. one thing i do know is finding parts in my area is actually decently hard. not many people part their cars out up here. and neons all i have seen are sold as the entire car. at this point though my CAI should be here in about a week or so and then that will be installed. and then after the car payments are done (this month woohoo) i will be looking for stick shift i can throw in the beast....

I need to get an SRT hood for mine. It's to fit the SRT-P bumper, though. And for the eventual turbo.
