K&N Vs. Other Filters

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

K&N Vs. Other Filters

Post by Trappy » Wed Oct 27, 2010 2:48 pm

I have to give a speech for school, and I decided to persuade people to buy a K&N filter. Anybody besides me have any input on them (good or bad) compared to Fram, Spectre, etc.?
Thanks!

K&N in the long run is cheaper, but not a lot.

I noticed a slight increase in drivability in higher gears. Seemed to pull a little nicer in 5th.

The problem is that there is more room for error with oiling. Generally it isn't a problem on MAP sensor cars, but MAF sensors have been known to get clogged up when the filters are over oiled.

There was some discussion on BITOG that silicon (dirt) numbers went up in dustier areas because it doesn't filter as well.

This. That's what I've heard numerous people say, and have read a couple times in different places.

Yeah, I never noticed it because I am surrounded by highways so the amount of dirt road that my car has ever driven on in it's 92000 miles is probably about 5 miles.

Yeah. Seems like only the country folk complain about the dirt issue...

That really depends on the application. Since his topic isn't neon specific.

The air filters for my Raider are quite ridiculous. IIRC, about 2.5 filters would buy a K&N.

But then again, it is a MAF control system. Tho I have contemplated swapping it over to a Chrysler speed density PCM. It just doesn't have as much power as the 3.0 in the Sundance. With 4.625:1 axles, it ought to do better.

I have a K&N in the neon, it's fine. The trade off is finer filtering paper element vs. less restriction of the gauze element. For probably 90% of people this isn't going to be a big issue. For what it's worth I've put almost 200,000km on my car with a k&n, the car has over 300,000 on it.

I also ran a k&n on my escort which was a map car. As long as you don't drench the living hell out of the element it will be fine. I never had an issue, but I oiled the filter sanely.

The chrysler engineer that was at the last Modern Performance meet said that the best filter he's found is the Supertech filters that are sold at Walmart.
