Help with overheating issue.....

Post by partyboy1122 » Tue Nov 02, 2010 3:02 pm

My 2000 neon is my winter beater....I have had it for a few years.

It's been sitting for a while, and winters coming around...I'm trying to get it back on the road.

Fuel rail was rusted, fixed that....

Just came inside after letting the car idle for over 40 minutes. Went back out and the water temp gauge was pinned at hot, and coolant pissing out of the over flow tank.

I am assuming the head gasket is done on this car, as before I parked it last year I had some overheating issues with it.

Any suggestions? First things to check for?

Car does have 170k. Don't know when the head gasket was changed or water pump, thermostat, etc. I have owned it since 90k and did not replace any of those mentioned.

the thermostat. Sitting for a while it could be stuck or corroded closed so no coolant would be flowing to radiator. Hopefully you didnt toast anything in the process

chances are if there was no problems with the timing components before you bought it, it was never changed. The regular interval for replacement is 100k so that would've been while you owned it. I'd just take the time now and replace it all, even though a thermostat is what is your problem now most likely.

Ya, I went out checked the thermostat. It was deff stuck closed. Replaced it, but now I also noticed my fan is not kicking on and is legit broken.

Looking for a new fan at the junkyard tomorrow and will report back to see if the issue continues.

Thanks guys.

Unless you pulled the t'stat while the engine was still hot, and coolant contacting it, it would be closed. They close fairly rapidly once out of liquid to keep them at temp. I would say your whole problem was/is the fan not running. Did you check for voltage going through the fan relay? Or that the relay was switching on?

Or if the fan was seized, check that the fuse is not blown.

If the thermostat was corroded closed I would pull the water temp sensor also. Its element could have crap in it too. And like the thermostat, their cheap maybe 20ish dollars or so.
