Craigslist + Used/Replacement Phone = Never again

Post by 2005.Neon.SXT » Tue Nov 16, 2010 10:02 pm

Short story, but I went to Craigslist to try and buy a replacement phone for the wife. Just something simple, $50, same exact phone that she had (the one that broke). Anyway, so I text this dude and meet up with him about 30 minutes away (he drove roughly 15-20 minutes, I believe). I get the phone, ask if the ESN has been cleared and ready to go, and he replies "Yea man, it's all good. You can check it out if you want." So I do... and everything looks kosher. I hand him $50, I get the phone and charger and we go our separate ways.

On the way home, I drive into the Sprint store because I figure "well, might as well get it taken care of before I go home since it's on the way." Well, the lady is doin her thing and says that she can't pull the phone numbers off the broken one because it's that broken. "That's fine" and she goes onto scanning the barcodes (ESN) on the phones. "Umm.. did you keep this guy's contact information?", "Well... I have his number that he used to call." She goes on to tell me that the phone is active on another account :banghead: of course! Why WOULDN'T it happen to me.

Anyway, long story short... we hunted some numbers from the "scammed" phone, picked out one address, drove by, didn't see the car that this dude used, called people, no one knows who "Brian" is, etc. So I got my wife's broken phone, and now I got this other phone that's in great condition, but probably stolen... Craigslist doesn't really have a "Hey, this person just frauded me. Flag his account" button. I understand that they can't help me, but to at least flag his account... that's all I wanted. But nope. Nothing. And Sprint is saying that we're SOL as well. They did however tell us that the account that the phone is under is "Suspended" due to "Military [deployment] Orders" (which is why we believe it's stolen).

So that's my story. I need to hurry up and get a concealed permit license and a gun to carry with me in the car. Friggin thug is probably enjoyin his damn drug money. I swear if I ever see him again though...

Oh, so for all you 2gn'rs that live on the West side of Raleigh (this guy is specifically from Durham)... lemme know if you see a white Suzuki Sidekick. This one in particular has 30-Day Tags... obviously not for long though...

Anyway, that's my night. Later 'all!! :D

happen to me before....

best thing to do is ask for the esn number and call sprint and ask them if its reported stolen or anything since your buying it off craiglist.

i used to do that all the time when i used to have verizon.

Thats why you always call Sprint while he is infront of you. You learn the hard way like I did.

Yep, quoted for truth, guys. I just didn't think anything of it. It's whatever, really, but just really pisses me off.

yeah craigslist is horrible for stuff like this since it isnt regulated at all, its just a big bulletin board. I have had good luck with it but you have to be carefull, srry to hear about the phone though.

you really need to be carefull with craigslist. a lot of thugs/thieves/scammers will post stuff for sale and end up robbing the person during the meet up/exchange.... very comon around the holidays
