Stock-size new tire suggestions
Stock-size new tire suggestions
It is time to replace my tires, and i need some input on new rubber.
I am currently running Yoko Avids (185/60R15), and am looking for the same size tire. I like how the Yoko's feel, but they lasted about 20K less than rated for. And i do take care to rotate them and keep them as they should be lol.
I live in Colorado, so i need something decent in snow/all weather, but i live on the western slope, so heavy snow usually is not an issue.
I want my money's worth, but reading so much in the tire forum about so many tires i could use some no BS input for future tires. And please don't say Perelli's. I don't want to buy a name. I want to buy tires....

Nothing makes people doubt the american education system like seeing a psycho driving a customized dodge neon.

What did you do to the Yoko AVID TRZ to only get 60,000 out of them?
That is the only tire I have immediate experience with other than the junk that came on the car from the factory. Even at 60,000 they are good buy for their price, but I can understand being let down by not getting the full 80,000 out of them.
My first set of the TRZs I got 55,000 miles out of them but had to turn them in under Yokohama's tire cracking warranty. They were looking to go a full 80,000+ miles and that is why I got such a good pro rating on the new tires. I have since put the TRZs on my work car (that will be a true test of their life because I've already put almost 30,000 miles on them in just over a year) and just put a set on my wife's Caliber R/T.
What really holds me to this tire is more the performance value of it for an all season tire. They are really good in all driving conditions and I suspect that finding a tire that does that and lasts 60,000 - 80,000 miles is going to be difficult in their price range and in slightly higher price ranges.

For the price I have almost resigned myself to getting them again. I am not an aggressive driver and do try to take care of my tires, so I really have no idea why they didn't last like they should have.
They were a fine set of tires before they seemed to go bald overnight. Sigh.
What I need to know is if there is a same-size tire that would be worth trying, or are they all nowhere near the Yoko's?

I don't know how they perform but the Michelin Harmony looks like a good option, but they are $111 each. There are some really good reviews on tire rack.
The Hankook Optimo H727 looks like a decent tire and is $67 each from tirerack.

I went up to 195/60/15 to get a bigger selection. There seems to be more choices and more modern tires. I'm digging my $73 Yokohama AVID ENVigors. They are a bit wider and only +2% MPH AND not 80K mile rocks.
I havent had a chance in the snow yet but they do well in the rain.

^I have the same tires in the same size on my winter wheels, excellent tire. I had the old AVID V4S back in the day, and got around 20K out of them, give or take. They claimed 50k miles but I rarely see tires last as long as the OEM claims.
Frank - you've gotten 80k out of a set of tires? That's remarkable
I don't even have 50k on the whole car and I'm on my 3rd set of tires, 4th if you count the XS on my 16's that I used for 6 months this year. Stockers were balding at like 20k, ran the V4S for 20k, then the XS for maybe 5k and now the ENVigors which are brand new.

Just because the Yoko AVID TRZ will go to 80k doesn't mean they are rocks. They are very good tires for their price.
The AVID TRZs that are on the Prius are at about 30,000 miles. I haven't checked their wear yet, but it really doesn't matter too much how long they last there. That will be the first car to show how long they will last.
I haven't hit 80k on them yet, but they were definitely trending to hit 85k - 90k before being unsafe.OB wrote:Frank - you've gotten 80k out of a set of tires?
