Anyone get chest pain/pressure?

Post by 2005.Neon.SXT » Sat Nov 20, 2010 9:31 am

This has been a reoccurring thing over the years since I had been in the Marines, but occasionally my chest will start filling up with this pressure that hurts. It's one of those feelings where if you crack/pop it, all that pressure and pain would go away. But I can't seem to do that because 1) it hurts like hell when I try and 2) when I do try and pop my chest and go through the pain of trying, it never works. I did a little research a couple years ago to find out, and I just did some right now even. I'm not really sure what to make of it. Only two things that have come up during my quick research online are: Tietze Syndrome or Costochondritis.

Anyway, just trying to see if any of you guys have experienced the same thing and what resolution, if any, you came up with. I've heard that it's mainly the people who work out, get this pain, but the only thing I've been doing lately is running with the wife (M-F, every morning at 7am :D).

What do you guys think?

Upper, or lower chest? I get pain in the lower, but it is digestive related. Kind of like super intense hunger pains, but it only started after my gall bladder was removed. Eating something generally gets rid of it. I was seriously thinking heart attack the first time it happened. But I doubt eating will solve that.

I think you should talk to a doctor and maybe get some tests done... chest issues are nothing to fuck around with.

I watch the Doctors everyday and they've always said any paid in your chest should be looked at as serious and you should consult with a doctor asap!

Well I have been to a doctor, but can't assume Andrew has. Didn't really solve anything. Made the doctors some good insurance $$$.

Can't say that if it has been going on throughout his service that if it didn't kill him it isn't going to now, but he's still kickin'. :)

But by all means, if you haven't been to a doc in the Marines about it, or after, you should really get an expert opinion. I would think with the medical benefits in the service, you would of seen a doctor about it, but then there are possibly other, (maybe not the best reasons in hind sight) not to.

That's exactly what I'm sayin! Chest pains are nothing to mess around with, but alas... military medical opinions, or maybe just the Marine Corps', suck!

It is upper chest pains. If I had to give you guys an idea of where it's located: Sternum Bone (which should be exactly between the nipples), go 45* up (towards your neck, and towards your right side). If you were to make an even triangle (equilateral) from the points of your sternum, your right nipple (if you have one ), and the point where the pain is... that's where it's at. Opposite side of the heart.

As far as seeing a doctor (in the Marines)... I have... this was when I went to get my heart palpitations checked out last year and they told me it was "normal". "Nothing to worry about".

Anyway... I've got a couple weeks till my EAS (still on Terminal Leave since 18th of October), so I want to try and hit up the Naval Hospital before I'm technically not Active Duty anymore... shitty part about that is that it's a 2 hour drive to the base.

Friggin military and the wear-n-tear they put on our bodies. I hate it. Honestly I'd rather be 100% ok than to be 50% disabled with a monthly paycheck for the rest of my life and having to deal with health issues.

Perhaps see a family doctor for a second opinion. Could just be something stress related. If it's on the frequent side I would definately get it looked at. Personally the internet is great, but if you listen to it you'll have every ailment known to man. Good for research, not a diagnosis.

Last time I had chest pain my lung had collapsed. Interestingly enough it started as a kneck pain so I walked it off for a day - funny story.

You know you get medical benefits through the VA for a few years after you are out right?

Good thing about that is the VA is not military.

Hit them up and get it taken care of.

Have you filed any claims with the VA yet for disability? That would most likely be a service connected issue and net you something... even if it's as little as 10-20%...

 collapsed lung? Damn.. I hope it's not that serious. Glad you're alright though... I hope?

I have filed for my claims. My Battalion doesn't give a crap about helping their Marines out when they're fixin to leave, so I kinda did everything on my own when I left. Anyhow, I pretty much said "everything hurts and I want everything checked out". I mean, why not, right? I get "ice-pick" headaches randomly, my lower back hurts, I get heart palpitations, chest pains, hip pains, etc...

Now... is the VA someplace I can hit up even though I'm still "active duty"? Or do I have to wait till I EAS?

That was probably 5 years ago now, all good so far :) Nothing a bit of minor surgery didn't fix, no need for major work. Waking up during the surgery was interesting

Not any pain, at least not until after surgery when I kept pulling and stepping on the tube they temporarily installed - God that's a sick feeling. They gave me a pretty healthy dose of morphine that knocked me out really quick, just didn't keep me knocked out the whole length. Came to and felt someone fiddling around in me, looked over to see the doc knuckles deep in the side of my chest installing a 5/8" hose asking for 5 more min, hahaha. Just laid down, let the man finish his work.

As others mentioned, get it checked out...
Also do not read up on the internet for diagnosing yourself, you will get bad if not incorrect information. I've been dealing with chest pains for the past couple years, it's called "Angina". I was told when it happens to sit down and relax until the pain goes away. But my issue is also related to the other issue's I've been dealing with related to my heart problems.

Certain cold medicines and decongestants will give you that feeling. Have you had any recently?

Maybe your bi/tricuspid valve is acting up.

Acid reflux?

Pretty sure the VA is one of those once you separate things.

My wife was diagnosed with Costochondritis about 2 months ago after feeling some intense pain in her sternum and ribs. Usually the joints between the ribs and sternum are the center of pain, with sore ribs also common. She has dealt with back problems for years and went through a period of very high stress and illness immediately prior to the pain beginning. If it is Costochondritis, there isn't much you will be able to do besides taking anti-inflammatory medication and taking it easy for awhile. Definitely ask a doctor about it, as there are other medical issues that share similar symptoms.
