If it's right at the bottom of the cylinder like it looks like in the pic, I *think* you'll be OK. May want to do something about the rods, however... that one looks like it may be tweaked a tiny bit.

Yep, nothing wrong with a little chunk of cylinder wall missing. As long as it is below the piston travel, and the bore is still round. Didn't bother my VW 1.7 liter at all. Hell it even was missing the bottom tab off the piston skirt, and never complained. Put a lot of miles on that engine with a main cap from another.

Those Germans have damn good tolerances when one main drops and exits stage left. Then you take one off a 1.6 block, buy a new bearing shell, bolt it on and torque it down, and the crank still turns by hand, and the clearance is well within spec. For some reason the oil pressure was much better too.

I would have the block checked out before writing it off.

I suggest having that block magna fluxed to look for stress cracks, i would hate to see the whole motor go after you get it back together. next time use a progressive controller and jet it rich.
Yup it definately needs to go lower. If its not scrapeing constantly why you are driving then its not low enough bro.
Was not the reason the rod went like it did...

I'm 99% positive something got sucked into the motor.

I'd do what OD say LnS...if it don't affect the "efficiency" of the motor and still runs fine...then adopt the Canadian modo "if it ain't broke....don't fix it"/ "run it till it's dead"...ok the second one is my life motto but hey... :D

Oh yea, I see it. Looks like the one of the left doesn't have the performance bend that the one on the right does.

Needs MOAR bendorz. Problem solved.

Bling!

But yeah have the block thoroughly inspected, if it's fine run it.

And no, I didn't have my VW block inspected. It had 300,000 miles on it, so if it let go, well it had a good life. But it just kept on going like the damn energizer bunny. :D
