Repairing Exhaust Tips

Hey guys so take a look at these tips on my Borla system. The previous owner painted them black and then ground the paint off. I'm looking to see how to bring the chrome back to life. You can see the copper peeking through chrome. I was told these are triple plated meaning there are different levels of chrome so can I take this remaining layer off for the next one or does it need to be replated?

New tips or rechroming are your best options. Once the chrome starts to Peel or chip there is no saving it.

Yeah, same thing happened with mine. They are triple chrome plated. If you use metal polish or chrome polish and rub eventually you will hit another layer of chrome. I did it with mine but it's tedious so I never finished since I took it off the car.

So just keep polishing it with chrome/metal polish? Easy enough. It's not going on the car for like 6 months so Ill do a little bit every now and then

Yep, just keep polishing until more chrome shows up. If you have the time and patience to do it, that's all you should need.

There is no other layer of chromium under there. Triple plated means it is first zinc plated, then copper, and finally chrome. What you sand down to is the zinc, which will shine up fairly well, but it will rust eventually. What I don't understand is why Borla would not just use polished stainless like the oem SRT rear section. Seems kind of cheap to me. Unless they triple plated stainless tips, but then is it 400, or 300 series?

At least with the 306 stainless tips, you can sand your fingers off, and you still have a shiny rust proof surface. Score one for DCX.
