car shuts off while driving

Post by Swordfish2Cowboy » Thu Dec 02, 2010 1:00 am

Sort of. I'll be driving along and the cluster and radio will shut off, and the cluster restarts with a brake light and seatbelt light, but the rest of the car is fine. Cruise control still works, and the motor never stops running, but the stereo makes a loud pop and it kind of freaks me out that I might have a short somewhere and it will catch fire or ruin something.

Any ideas of the cause?

It happened a few days ago after driving 100 miles or so, lasted about an hour, and I haven't seen anything since. Before the car would actually shut itself off and turn itself back on at stoplights. Everything would die, and then come back on. Freaked me out last winter but then went away.

Shit something similar happened to my sisters 01 a few years ago and it ended up being something under the hood. I don't remember what it was but I'll ask my dad.

I had this problem and it was the wire from the battery to the starter. Once I changed it out the problem stopped.

Check the battery terminal cables. They may look good and feel snug but give em a good pull.

My car did this last Friday. The negative terminal came completely off when it lost all power. I imagine it was just barely touching when the radio/cluster (with the brake and seatbelt lights) /headlights (really awesome at 70MPH in the middle of the night) kept flickering on and off.

I'll check it out. Haven't had any problems since, but I had something like this happen before and it was the terminals. I think I need to upgrade.

I couldn't find this thread again... The problem with my sister's car was a ground coming from the PDC under the hood, so maybe check there.
