Craziest question ever!! Putting an automatic in my 02 r/t

Post by TOPH R » Thu Dec 09, 2010 9:10 pm

Well boys and girls, my fiancee can't get the hang of standard, and I don't feel like buying another neon.

What feasible way do I have of throwing an auto tranny in the neon?

Will the older 3 speed work alright?
Will I need an atx computer, or is the older tranny mainly mechanical?
If I swap in a atx computer, I will lose intake manifold control.

Help, I would love to keep my r/t, but it would have to be an auto.

The 31th (3 speed atx) will work with your R/T pcm. The only part that would need wired somehow would be the TC lock up. Unless you can get a 1gn ATX, I think those might have been hydro lock up, instead of a solenoid on the valve body.

But you will need the shifter, a 2001 ATX TB, the kick down cable, etc. Your best bet would be to find an '01 donor, at least for all the ATX related pieces, even if you go with a 1gn ATX. An '00 would work, exept the TB. Different style IAC.

Tho you could just remote mount the IAC valve in your car, and leave the IAC on the '00 TB unplugged, but the plunger would need to be turned so it is shut. Or there is the LFS 60mm TB, which would help make up for the power loss, due to two less gears.

I would say a 3spd ATX would be perfect for the RT

not many people have ventured going ATX vs MTX, there would need to be a few changes made like a harness that supports the sensors needed for the atx. You should be able to find the atx harnesses cheap as everyone seems to go with a mtx...

Why not just get her an ATX Neon ??
Then, you could have the best of both worlds.

Personally, I would never remove the MTX in an R/T Neon, and 'castrate' it by replacing it with an ATX.

How would you like it, if your fiancée castrated you, huh ?? :)

I can understand your financial situation...

A new Neon can cost quite a bit...
An old one thats say 1000$ is not very reliable, so a 300$ ATX swap is something desirable in his case...

I would say I have a 3spd atx if you are down for a swap I am down for letting my ATX find a new home in your car... while you give me your MTX...

The great white north... bit of a drive for you lads.
I am thinking if the 1gn 3spd atx is hydro lock up, it would be the easiest way to go.

I would buy another neon, but I already have an f150 as well as the r/t. And shes NOT driving my truck :)

1995 DOHC has a 3.24 final drive ratio all the 00-01 have the 2.98... and the 96-99 had 2.98 SOHC and 3.19 DOHC.

As for the lock up not sure which years it was the electronic, but I assuem early 95 would be very simple to swap.

The RT trans could even sell for some good cash.

In fact if you ever consider selling all the bits clutch pedal assembly, trans etc, please let me know. Iwould love to convert mine to a stick so I can keep my family away from it!

The 1gns did not have a hydro lock up. They were all electronic. You can wire in a switch but if she forgets to turn it off comic to a stop it'll stall the car. Better option would be to find a 2000 atx harness.

To solve my similar issue I forced my wife to learn stick. 5 years later she still loves it.
