So, That One Guy is also the new guy . . .

Post by That One Guy . . . » Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:01 pm

Hello everyone! My name is Taylor and I'm a 19-year-old college student who is new to 2gn.org, to neons, and even to dodge! I just got a 2002 dodge neon base model. I think it's a pretty cool little car, but it could use some improvements because the base model is sooo bare-bones. :banghead:

I'm entering Kent State to Major in Musical Theatre, and even though that doesn't sound like a guy who is typically very mechanically inclined, while I'm not an expert, I can find my way around a car. I guess I'm interested in mechanical stuff because it disproves the stereotype that all theatre-guys are gays who talk with a lisp and couldn't change a tire to save their lives. None of which I am, lol. That, and I grew up in a family of people who work with their hands. (My father is now a building inspector, and previously owned his own HVAC business for 10 years.) My cousin is basically a car god though, and he'll be around to guide me in my mechanical endeavors. However, he's also new to MOPAR, as he's a Pontiac Fiero nut. So I figured that it'd be a good idea to get some advice from guys who know these cars.

Traditionally, my family is a Ford family. My parents owned all kinds of Mustangs throughout the 80's and now still own mostly Fords. My first car was a '96 Ford Probe GT. I loved that car . . . alas, it was not meant to be :sad7: A muslim immigrant in a mini-van rear-ended my Probe at 45mph plowing me into the saturn in front of me, and that was the end of my Probe . . . At first I wanted nothing else but another Probe GT. But ones that are worth buying are really freakin hard to find! So I started looking for other cars, and I found this Neon.

I am now finding that I don't have any specific preference toward ford, just toward anything by American Auto-makers. What are the biggest differences between working on Fords and on MOPAR vehicles? Since I do most of my own maintenance, is there anything specific I should know about Neons and their tendencies? My car has the first 4spd-auto offered on Neons, and I've already found that they're not held in high regard. What potential pitfalls should I be aware of? Anyways, thanks for reading my ridiculously long-winded introduction, and I'll be around!

Welcome fellow Ohioan!

One trouble area is going to be the LCA bushings (Lower Control Arms)

Changing the ATF in your 41te might help it live a little longer. The oil cooler in the radiator tends to fail, leaking coolant into the transmission, causing it to fail if not caught quickly. The best solution would be to just install an auxiliary cooler to avoid the problem all together. A t'stat might be needed for ohio winters, as the fluid temp will affect the shifts. Summit racing sells ATF coolers, and Perma Cool t'stats for oil.

Check out the FAQ section, as there are plenty of explanations there also.

Welcome! If you can drive an mtx, I suggest doing the swap. It's one of the best things you can do IMO

Thanks to all for the warm welcome! I promise that I will post some pics soon. I just need to find my camera . . .

Occasional demons, I understand some of that. But like I said before, while I can find my way around a car; I'm no expert. Therefore I get lost when you give me technical names and abreviations. You're gonna have to dumb down what you're saying to me for a bit. I do assure you that I'm a quick learner though, so the headaches on both sides should go away after a bit. Until then, :withstupid: describes me, lol.

r/tguy02, I want to do the MTX swap, but unfortunately for myself, I'm your stereotypical "broke college student". And I can only afford to do small mods at this time. Maybe when summer comes I can get the money together to swap it. What's the cheapest that it would cost if done properly? And how much of a pain would it be for a novice mechanic like myself?

41te is the name of your 4 speed ATX. ATF is transmission fluid, but I think you prolly knew that one. :)

Welcome! If you're doing an mtx swap, would you be doing it by yourself? And I'd say you can get a full swap anywhere between $150 to $500 for everything. It depends on who you get it from.

Well, it'd be waaaaay more expensive to have it installed professionally, so yeah I would be doing it myself. I'd have several knowledgable people available to consult with in case I ran into issues, but yeah basically myself and a few buddies. Is that a bad isea?
