How to add manual tranny fluid?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

How to add manual tranny fluid?

Post by lilnicko11 » Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:50 pm

As stated in the title? Whats the correct/proper way of changing your manual tranny fluid? I know its ATF+4 that is Mopar recommended for our cars. A step by step would be appreciated. K. Thanks. Is the fill spot located on the tranny casing??

Not for anyone who drives their car faster than a grandma.

2002 may still be the mopar gear oil. There should be a sticker with the MS spec, if it hasn't fallen off.

Depending on which car you are changing....

My 02 had ATf in it, although I got it at 58k so I'm not sure what it had originally.

My 02 says it uses ATF. The easiest way to put fluid in the trans is to get a piece of hose long enough to go from the fill point, route it out the fender above the tire, and put a funnel on the hose. If the trans is empty you will need just under 2qts.

*edit*

I just read the write up. Same idea, I just went out the fender instead of through the engine compartment. But now that I de-cluttered the engine bay I could do this from up top.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I wasn't sure of the cut off date, as '01 uses MS9417 (IIRC)

IIRC, the switch-over took place in 2002, but the use of friction material on the shift forks (which was the reason for the change to ATF+4) took place at the end of 2002. All 2003-up take ATF+4 per factory.

Everyone should switch to a synchromesh fluid regardless.
