3M Di-Noc Carbon Fibre Wrap

Post by dieseldak » Fri Dec 31, 2010 1:05 pm

Yesterday I picked up some of this stuff to do a couple things in the Neon and I have to say I love it. It is VERY forgiving and easy to work with once you figure it out. You can literally crumple it up in a ball then just take a heat gun to it and it comes right back to its original form. Vinyl cant do that. Here is what I have done so far but am picking up some more to do another couple small pieces.

I will start by saying that I HATE CF. But I have to say that I do like how the HVAC bezel came out. This stuff is a dead ringer for the SRT shift boot material.

Well done
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Yeah thats the only reason I went with it. The finish on it is very OEM looking and not too ricey. Its a hell of a lot more subtle than the bright silver checker thing that came on the car.

I prefer my real CF to imposters, but you did a good job with it.

Real carbon is nice, there is no denying that. This is just more OEM looking and only cost $10 to do. I dont even want to know what real carbon would cost, lol. Im just not that much of a baller...

Cost me $30/yard for carbon fiber. Enough to do my armrest and door inserts. Another $30 for the surfboard resin and a few bucks for foam brushes. Not too bad really. Cheaper than paying to have the stuff done.

Not bad at all, doing it that way actually makes carbon affordable.

Yep, and I even made a how-to on here if you are interested. It was my first time working with CF and it came out great. Sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread. Just thought you might be interested.

Looks awesome!! I wouldnt mind trying that on my injector cover or something under the hood. Too flashy for the interior for me but it definitely looks great.

Where did you get the materials?

Bought the CF from an ebay vendor "pennon" who said it was surplus from building race cars. The Ding All surfboard resin was from another ebay vendor as well. Got the foam brushes at wal mart.

OP where did you get this material? Might consider doing some things in the cali in this. I like the flat look to in instead of the glossy look of real cf.

nice.. IMO i hate the 3m stuff, only b/c i to do CF parts . while what u did , did come out pretty nice, when i see it on parts, i feel cheated, like oh thats kool, some one did that in cf, oh wait. nvm lol.

heres some of the parts ive done. noting like the shine of CF resin , and some other trix. ive been overlaying cf for bout 3 yrs now, and making custom pods. i hope to soon be a vendor on here ; )

That is nice carbon work but the reason I went this way is I think that shiny carbon all over my interior to me is tacky or "ricey". I guess im an old man inside. The 3M Di-Noc has a very OEM finish, it matches the factory SRT wheel and shift boot pefectly.

If you want really flashy "show" interior go true carbon fibre and be prepared to spend some coin, if you want an OEM looking interior that is much better looking than stock go Di-Noc for alot less.

That being said either option is better than a rattle can of paint, :)

In other words, if you want an oem look, you must go cheap!:P

Has anyone though about clear coating the Di-noc to try and replicate real CF?

It has been done but in my opinion it doesnt look even close to as good as real carbon fibre. It gives it some shine but you dont get the depth that real carbon has.

I agree too that the real carbon fiber is nice but for me the di-noc just matches the srt boot and such so nicley that for the few little parts id use it on. I wouldnt bother doing the real deal. that just my.02. now if i was doing something like ryans door panels id do the real deal.

I have to agree with most of you on hear. I have done real CF before (you can see it in my project log) and even have 2 yds sitting in my garage. But i started playing with the di-noc and really love the OEM look to it, so much so that I plan on redoing all my real carbon parts in the di-noc.

/\ LOL 1 nice thing about di-noc is you can just peel it off and the piece underneath is just fine. So think of it this way: I'm putting a protective covering on my CF pieces so they will not get damaged.

BTW hear are some I've done in the past day or so. And some of the curves on these have been VERY difficult
