PS Belt / Tensioner

Post by LyricsNLines » Mon Jan 03, 2011 9:33 pm

I was just driving home on the highway when I heard a popping sound. I got home and my power steering belt was missing. I installed a new one and it immediately disconnected. On further examing it seems the tensioner at the bottom (part that rotates clockwise is broken)

I can't get this replace for about a week due to low funds so I must ask is it safe to drive my neon without a power steering belt?

What harm could I cause?

Anyone have a how-to on replace the belt tensioner?

Is it the spring, or just the pulley?

Regardless...

I don't think you will damage it, but the "safe" part is a matter of how well could you steer it in an emergency situation?

You could do the "loop the lines" trick, and it will steer easier, but I'm not sure what a good temporary method would be for that. Maybe someone that has done it will chime in.

To loosen the tension on the ps belt you insert a 17mm wrench on the top of tensioner. At the bottom of that tensioner is a piece that looks like this...

mine is all broken and spins freely. when I install a new ps belt as soon as I crank the car, the belt comes off of the pictured piece because it is broken and moves freely.

above image but that is from a caravan. the top right portion is broken and moves freely not allowing my ps belt to stay attached.

You just need the idler pulley. The black plastic piece. That link tells you what to do to replace the pulley. You have to remove the whole aluminum piece from the engine to replace the pulley.
To see how to remove it, please read my timing belt replacement writeup as the same job must be performed there: Neon Timing Belt Replacement. Once you have the engine mount plate removed, you may begin to remove the pulley.
If it had been the tensioner spring, you would be shelling out over $300 for a new one.

Do you know what size the torx bolt is that bolts the pulley to the bracket?
