NEONs GALORE! ATX TO MTX SWAP !HELPP! AND DISCUSSION...

Post by jalomar2010 » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:15 pm

Okay, I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SE 2.0 l sohc engine.

I'm tired of my automatic trans its got 2 trouble codes 0441 and 0132. I think its a vacuum leak causing me problems. but I dnt care for automatic. I've always dreamed of drivin a 5sp whip. I want to swap my atx for a mtx. But I want to do it alone. I love cars. And my Neon was my first car. She's my baby so I wanna really do this swap right. I jus want to make sure I got everything right. So far I think I need a manual transmission I'm gonna use either the PT's or a R/T's. Then I need a clutch assemply which I'll be stealin from a SRT or 03+ mtx neon. And then replacin my throwout bearing with the clutch, a srt4 shifter and I also need a passenger side pv axle. right? Do I got everything right? does anyone hav anymore information that I can help. I jus got laid off so I'm short on cash. I plan I grabbin evrythin from mopar, ebay and jy. so plz giv me da scoop. Any info would be awesum! Thanx

I think it is more difficult to swap the 4-speed Atx, ´cause it´s electronically controlled and engaged with the pcm. The older 3-speed may be way easier to swap.
You may have to decide wether you like to use the hydraulic clutch pedal or the bowdenwired - depends on the trany you find. You may need another tranymount, too.

I'm goin wit hydraulic cuz it would be easier to find da parts. and doesnt da r/t and pt cruiser tranny both use hydraulic clutch assembies.

P0441 incorrect purge flow.
Common Chrysler fix - Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
P0132 O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor1)

Replace upstream o2 sensor.

Replacing your ATX will not cure those codes. ;)

SRT clutch will not fit the PT or R/T MTX. You will need an '03 up MTX PCM. And some rewiring. There are a few threads on this subject. Please do a little research. Then ask questions. It is going to cost a minimum of $100 just to get a replacement PCM reflashed to your car.

One to get you started.

Search down through the drivetrain section for ATX to MTX swaps. You can also use the search button Image at the top of the page

You have an o2 sensor, and possibly a Leak Detection Pump to replace. I would recommend getting that repaired first. A bad 02 will burn up your spare $ for swap stuff.

wow thanx Adrian! appreciate it. and on da sensor thing I think it has to do abt a Vacuum Leak. I'm tryin to figure out how to use Gumout carburetor cleaner to find da leak. cuz it's not in my hoses..and I'm short on money.

The selection of used manual trans' in central Florida is horrible so doing it cheaply isn't going to happen, just spend the 300 bucks and swap in another auto and fix it. I know a place in Sanford that has a manual cable trans from a 1gn not sure on mileage if your still going to do it. I have done it myself in my car and it is pretty easy... provided you didn't run a bunch of wires through the hole where the clutch cable goes. The cable clutches are pretty easy to work with.

An SRT clutch WILL NOT work. Unless it has been machined. There is a guy on the .org that will do it if you send him one, but a stock out of the box OEM SRT clutch wont work.

Also I'm not trying to be mean or an ass but please use spell check. The da's and dats are really annoying and may keep people from helping you

From what I can tell from his first post, there is nothing wrong with his ATX.

gas cap may have something to do with your 441 code but I doubt it.

Replace the o2 sensor and call it a day. Also crawl under the rear of the car and look for a square looking canister by the fuel tank on the passenger side. It should have 3 hoses going into it. If one of the hoses has come off put it back on and that may fix your evap problem. If not, follow that hose all of the way to the front of the car and make sure it is not broken or leaking. If all the hoses are in good shape and not popped off or dryrotted then it may be time for a new leak detection pump.

If you want the total realistic cost for a 5spd swap here in central Florida here goes

5spd hydro trans cheapest is in casselberry for a hydro at 300.00
5spd cable is 200 in cocoa.
axle 110 with out a core
The whole trans mount saga that I went through... another 70 bucks
pedals 50-150
clutch cable 50 used
shifter 50-150
shifter cables No idea got the hook up on mine.
Clutch 250 for an OEM replacement
Fluid 35
Axle Seals hell I dunno 15
Reserve fund 150 because you know your going to break something in the process.

So if you found everything the cheapest you would be looking at 800 to swap down here. Or sell the one you have and buy a manual. May be more cost effective before you go blowing your money away. Its all up to you. Of course hydro clutch stuff will probably be more expensive... but im not certain.

Vacuum Leak CONFIRMED!

Post by jalomar2010 » Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:41 pm

I did the vacuum leak check...And I FOUND IT! It's one of the three fuel lines. One of them has a big bubble on the end of it and cracks all on the bubble. It's a quarter sized bubble with small cracks all around it. So I'm gonna replace that line and replace the gas cap jus in case. But thanx alot for help. and i'll probably take a pic of it and show it to you guys.

Incorrect purge flow prolly due to the faulty hose.
