Abnormal Oil Consumption?
I checked my oil tonight at work, and i was 2 quarts low. I know my oil pressure sender has been leaking oil since I bought the car, but I don't think it's leaking THAT much. Someone told me that even the non-Magnum motors have PCV problems. I thought it was only a Magnum problem? What should I look for? What can I do?

We have a similar problem here and a buddy in workshop suggested to try something like

(oil stop leak). He told he had tried it himself and it should have been working - so we will try that, too.

The bad PCV location is an issue for non-mags too but it could be a combination of things. Worn seals, etc.
When my car was eating up a ton of oil with no signs of exhaust smoke or visible dripping, it was my headgasket. Hopefully it's not that.

That's just a temp fix IMO.Gnuserup wrote:We have a similar problem here and a buddy in workshop suggested to try something like

Do not use any stop leaks.
"normal" oil consumption is considered to be no more than 1 qt per 1000 miles. Until then it's not technically a problem in many dealers eyes.
1qt over the course of an oil change is what I would consider normal.
Get the oil leak fixed and then start checking consumption.

I changed the oil probably 1500 miles ago.Danteneon wrote:The question is, how long does it take before you are 2 qts low?
As for seeing blue out of the tail pipes, IDK, I'm always driving it, haha.
I do drive it spiritedly 85% of the time.
It does have 141,000 miles also.
No more than 1 quart of oil per 1,000 is acceptable in dealer's eyes. Interesting...most dealers are recommending oil changes every 5000 miles....so if I'm eating 1 quart per 1200 miles.....that works out to 4.1 quarts of oil consumed per oil change. I guess pulling into the Dodge service drive with knocking rods is acceptable? Hahahahaha!

Abnormal oil consumption
My 2000 ES with an n/a 2.0 has 123,000 miles and uses 1 quart of oil per 3000 mile oil change so I consider myself lucky since I drive it right foot flat most of the time. I do use synthetic oil though. I am losing more oil through the sparkplug tubes than past the rings I believe. I plan to replace the tubes this spring and hope to reduce the oil usage.

You're probably throwing a fair amount into your intake manifold too, unless you have a catch can.

x2. get your flashlight out, there's probable a pint sitting in there.racer12306 wrote:You're probably throwing a fair amount into your intake manifold too, unless you have a catch can.
modern cars with functioning catalysts wont puff blue smoke when burning oil.
My plan is a metal 1gn valvecover with the PCV back of the cover and I'll improve upon the oil baffles.

I told him to stick his finger into the IM. I bet there's a small pool of oil on the bottom. Every once and awhile I stuff a rag in there to soak it up.
Grab a catch can (I still need one, hah!), you'd be surprised how much gross oil gets sucked through.
But... like I said before, something else has to be contributing.

I checked mine every time I'm taking a hard corner and my oil pressure gauge takes a momentary nose dive, haha. That's when I know I'm 3 quarts down, which is usually around 5000 miles.Cokedoctor wrote:Hmm. I check mine whenever I get a feeling that I aught to. lol
I noticed that my 03 started using a little bit more oil after 100k miles. I've got about 133k miles and my car sees 5000+rpm on a daily basis. Spirited driving does all kinds of stuff that you find out over the long run. I would say just fix the sending unit and keep your eye on it.
To my knowledge, the PCV-related oil consumption wasn't exclusive to the Magnums. I noticed an immediate difference when I switched to a 1gn valve cover and put the PCV down near the mouth of the intake manifold.

Yeah, the 1g PCV valve isn't in a dumb spot. I want to do this some day. I told Cokedoctor he shouldjonnymopar wrote:To my knowledge, the PCV-related oil consumption wasn't exclusive to the Magnums.
