Spark plug tube removal ??

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Post by Kezzo123 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 1:07 pm

How do you remove the spark plug tubes in the cylinder head do they just pull out or screw in?

Thanks in advance! :D

They pull out, but they may not go easily.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Clamp a large set of vice-grips on the top part of the tube and start yanking them out.

If you are lucky, like some of us were, they may already be loose and leaking oil into your plugs

Basically it is red loctite 241 or similar. That is what I used anyways. They never came loose after that. I just reused the originals in that head.

RockAuto about $2 each.

To remove mine I used soft hammer and tap forward back left and right a few times and they came out easy.

Agreed on Loc241 or 271 to reinatall

So I know this is an old post... but my car has been consuming oil lately and when first start it sounds like a bad piston slap. Once the car gets warm the sound goes away. I know with my 1st gen when the tube seals go bad it sounds like this cold and eats oil. So i just went out and grabbed my plug wires and started pulling them off and Cylinder 2's tube slid out of the head with the plug wire. And Cylinder 3s tube is sitting higher then the rest of the tubes.

So I am guessing this is my issues. So these tubes do not screw in, they are just sealed into the head with sealer? What is the PN for the sealer?

Thanks guys!

They are press fitted into the head with some loctite sealant, 586 or something.

alright...so I have an issue. I really hope someone looks at this early enough seeing as I have to work in the morning.

I was cleaning my engine bay and decided to clean my Magnacore wires. When I pulled the wire out of Cylinder 2 (much like the guy above), the tube came right out.

I can't get the damn thing back in. It's pissing me off and idk what to do.

Any suggestions? Would removing the entire valve cover make putting it back in easier.

I've never had the entire tube pull out on me, like that.
If you've already tried to re-install it with the valvecover in place, it may be better to go ahead and remove it, like you said.

I have seen spark plug tubes come out with the valvecover when the valvecover was removed, I haven't seen it happen from removing the spark plug itself - Yet.

yea, the entire tube came out around the spark plug wires. I'm just gonna remove the VC and replace the VC gasket too.

Put the tube back in the right place, find a suitably sized socket and place on top. Hit with hammer

Order up a set of new tubes and cover gasket set

If it was that easy bro. There was something stopping it from going in. I'm gonna try taking a picture of it. I'm getting ready to go get a VC gasket and red locktite now.

Don't forget to get 4 new spark plug tube seals too.

felpro do a total gasket set with the Vc gasket, tube seals and the 10 bolt seals, that's what i used!

Probably the old loctite stopping it going in.

You'll wanna drain the oil and clean it up with some alcohol then use a heat gun and a screwdriver or scalpel to get the old loctite off.

I got that gasket set from RockAuto for I think $25 and the tubes were like $1 each!

I work at Autozone so I'll be getting the crap from there lol. I don't think I have enough money to do the gasket and seals. I'm gonna see though. Ugh...

Oh, and its definitely not locktite stopping it from going in which is why I'm so frustrated. I can't even get it down and around the spark plug. When I looked thru the tube with a flashlight (u know, once it stopped going in) I saw springs... and what I believe to be a rocker arm. Not exactly sure since I've never really been on the inside of a motor. I DEFINITELY seen springs though. U know, on the sides of the tube. I couldn't get it past that

ran into a couple issues...

this is what ALL 4 plugs looked like when I pulled them...smfh

Image

then, for some reason... I thought I needed to remove the coil pack to take off the VC. and, I got pissed when this happened...

Image

so I left it alone and proceeded to remove the cover

old gasket
Image

new gasket, grommets and seals
Image

then... I realized I went thru ALL that trouble only to see that all I had to do was turn this damn thing :banghead:

Image

but hey, at least I have a new VC gasket and grommets and seals and shit lol.
