Leaking Oil

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Leaking Oil

Post by That One Guy . . . » Fri Feb 18, 2011 4:51 pm

Hey. I have an 02 base model. A few weeks ago I had a headlight bulb go out on me, and when I replaced the bulbs I removed the entire air box. I figured, "It's just in the d*** way, and it doesn't really do anything anyway." I made sure everything was secure with Zip ties, and put a tiny hole in the top of the filter and plugged the air temp sensor right into it. Anyway, now I'm leakin oil. Not much, but enough that I've gotten a sizeable stain in my driveway. I was just wondering if it could be related to me removing the airbox before I start doing diagnostics on the thing.

Nope. You did nothing that would effect the engine in any way.

Unless you left out the part that says how you were using a massive pry bar to remove the resonator and punched a hole in the block when you slipped :D
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I really hate when that happens. I once was vacuuming the carpet in my car and the bedplate separated. And then like a week later, I changed the oil and my brake lines burst.

But in all seriousness, check out the oil pressure switch on the back of the block near the bottom close to the transmission. They have a tendency to leak inside the actual switch after enough heat cycles. Replacing them fixes the leak and it's usually less than $10.

uh, what about the oil/EGR/recirc tube that come off the top of the valve cover and is supposed to connect somewhere on the air box or air filter?.. you never mentioned what you did with this connection since you removed the whole air box?

could be blowing some oil ou that thing if it's not connected to anything...(?)

The connection on the back of the valve cover is just a breather vent. Air gets sucked into that opening. (why so many people just put small filters on them, if they hook them up to anything at all)

The only line that could spit oil comes off the PCV valve on the right side of the valve cover, but it is hooked into the intake manifold, not the air filter housing.

And FYI, our cars dont have an EGR system.

Yeah, I just left that opening open. I was gonna put a little filter on it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I put in a fresh quart of oil today, and she goes to the shop tomorrow because I have 3 papers to write this weekend (full time college student with 19 credit hours this semester Xp) and don't have time to fiddle with'er atm.

I'd hold off on the shop for right now. Just poke around to see if you can find the leak when you have free time. Unless its a big stain that needs to be mopped up everyday.

The breather/air make up hole will blow oil out if there is enough blowby in the rings. Also under hard acceleration, the PVC valve doesn't do much, as vacuum is low under those conditions.

But if no tube is connected to the VC, it would hit the exhaust manifold, and smoke. If the tube that went to the air box is still connected, oil will run down that tube, and drain out where it ends. Mine will do that. The filter I have clamped to the tube is well oiled. All I did to "fix" it was make the tube run uphill.

You really need to put a filter on there. You are sucking dust directly into your VC, and the oil.

The AIT sensor doesn't need to be mounted to the air filter. Just zip tie it near the air inlet at the fender.
