I need helppppp

Post by inthemaking » Fri Feb 25, 2011 10:43 pm

Hello. I just bought a 2000 Neon. yeahhhhhhh boiiiii lol... Anyways I have gotten myself in to a rutt. last night there was a nasty snow storm, long story short, I had a problem stopping and to avoid a front end damange I had to jump a curb before I smoked the back end of a buddies car. Well after I had recked I had gotten out of the car to see what all was wrong with the Neon I noticed that the front wheels are crossed eyed lmfao.... Soooo I only lived like a block up the street I crawed the Neon home. I fiured that since the roads were ice there wasnt going to be to much stress on the car... Anyways When I got up out of bed today to work on the car, checked out the Tie rods and the right front side was all bent to hell.... So I have been doing some online research to see how to fix it. and I have come to a stop when I relized that supposedly the inner tie rod are un-serveable according to dodge... But as I looked at some of the post on this site I found out the MOOG sells the tie rod... My ordeal is how to get the damn thing off and replace it.... So any help would be great... ty :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

While the picture links don't work, there is more than enough info to get you going. And while you are introducing yourself, this is more of a question post. That's why I moved it.

Welcome BTW :)

So I have checked a few other topics out about the inner Tie Rod. I have the new one already, But I am still having trouble removing the old bent one. I've heard so far that many people have had this issue. I tryed Vise grips etc to remove it, but noooooo friggin luck. (I am doing this with the steering rack on the Neon. Because I don't have the proper tools) Any ideas peeps?

Well I could do just that, But I have no where to rase the car. I live in a moble home park. The owners of the park says "It's a upper class park so you can't work on you car in the driveway" (Lmao) So do to that issue I try and stay under the rader so they don't get pissy. I am also very limited on funds.

If you heat whichever part is on the outside thread it will spread out a bit and be easier to twist off. Just make sure there's no grease or anything nearby that can start on fire or your "upper class" may be reduced to embers very quickly.

I have never seen heat not work and someone have the same problem you've had, so, aside from taking it to a mechanic, that's the only thing I can think of.

Well the Rod is screwed into the steering piston. So how hot do you think I should get it? I dont want to damage anything.

So do you have the outer one off, and are attempting the inner? Or are you still struggling with the outer at the knuckle?

I have a How To posted for the outer ones.
BigMac wrote: The inner tie rod can be changed, at least on a 1st gen. It was a real pain breaking it loose -- I needed a 16" crescent wrench (which fortunately I had), and there wasn't much room to turn it. I don't know if it's realistically possible on the driver's side of a 2nd gen, but it should be in theory.
But if they are that tight, I doubt Vice Grips are going to cut it. :(

You may need to get a wrench, or an adjustable to fit it. If AutoZone sells a wrench that will fit, it would be cheaper than a Cresent. The fun part will be measuring it to figure the size, unless someone chimes in.
