BenAthar Progress/Project Log

Post by BenAthar » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:04 am

This is the first log so far for my car. I first had gotten tires put on. Not what I rather have, but something to get me going and the car back on the road.
Since the tires are 14's and working on getting 15's.
Overall the tires were about 250$ with a good discount from my neighbor who works at Discount Tires. May get rims from there.

water issue in trunk

Post by BenAthar » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:29 am

I read from a few other posts in here about how to combat the leaking taillights and the standing water that gets either into the rear seat floorboards or the trunk.
I got a solution that may help out.
I took a metal cutting drill bit and drilled holes in the spare tire cavity towards the front of the car.
The holes are about 3/8" so it shouldn't have too much of an issue. Since the gas tank is under the back seat, it will not interfere there.
I believe that it's not really the taillights that are the cause of the water getting in there.
There are one way vents in the trunk that could cause most of the water getting in there. Since they are made of a fiber type of material.
I also think that some of taillights are at fault, but looking around my rubber may also have something to do with it.

Trunk carpeting

Post by BenAthar » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:42 am

I finally got the carpeting in the trunk dried out. It took a week in the garage to get it all dried out. May use some dynamat damping sheets to lessen the noise, for a sub later on....
I now just have to put it back in. I am thinking of cutting out the tire well portion to make it easier to remove instead of the whole carpet next time. JC Whitney has general material in which to fab another carpet or for the sub box.
With the tire well detached, it will help in combating the water issue coming from the trunk, till I can update the front and rear lights. So glad NOPI is nearby to pick up the parts instead of having them ship them!

if your tails are leaking you just need new gaskets..... even if the old ones still look good. Trust me I know.

same here, I'd replace the gaskets first before I started drilling holes. they're only like 10 bucks at most.

Not a big fan of the gap there.

I can see where it may be leaking, but not sure. Could be running through the gasket itself, hence why the next pic looks the way it does in there.

Hope this helps some for those who asked for pics. Going to be upgrading the tails and head lights soon, so not to worry about just yet.

Yes, that is almost definitely what is causing your issue. Replace those and your problem will almost undoubtedly be solved.

Be sure to clean the area up where the gasket contacts the metal. You don't want all that crud messing up the seal.

You can always run a small bead of RTV around the gasket surfaces. I did it with my 1gn and my 2gn and it stopped all water leaking issues.

Thanks everyone.
From the way the gaskets looked or the marks that the opening made on the gaskets you wouldn't think that it was leaking.
Like I said on one of the pictures captions, it just might be leaking from the top of the gasket and then leaking through it. Will be picking some up soon to fix this issue.

after looking around NOPI.com for some aftermarket tails and heads, I think I will be going that route, once I can score some money to pay for them.
In the meantime I'm still going to get the gaskets for the stock tails, that will help with the leaking issue for the time being.

Radiator replacement

Post by BenAthar » Thu May 26, 2011 9:49 am

This weekend I am going to be replacing my radiator. Mostly since I have a leak in the bottom tank and with it being part plastic and metal, making hard to really repair. Not to mention that you can pick one up relatively cheap anyways.
Since I need it to keep it from overheating when taking an emissions test. Thought that the heater core was bad, but flushed the system out and had the heat running and the heater wasn't heating with the flush going, so that's not an issue! Good thing, don't like changing out heater cores. Way to difficult to change in any car!
Will post pics for possible How-To if pics good enough.

Radiator replacement *snag*

Post by BenAthar » Sun May 29, 2011 1:14 pm

ok, one thing I notice between the factory radiator that was in my car all this time and the replacement that I got from Rockauto.com is that the trans cooler lines that are built in, is that the ends where the hose attaches to doesn't come off like on the OEM radiator. Interesting since this can mean I might have to either replace the rubber hoses or the have to do some slight cutting on the ends to get them off.
I already did one and looks like there is a barb on the end and it don't come easily. Will post the pics once I'm done sometimes today. :-k :-k

Radiator installed

Post by BenAthar » Mon Jun 13, 2011 9:09 am

I now have my radiator installed and filled and ready to go. It took me a day and a half to get it in, but it's in. With my model car I had to make a few adjustments with the Trans lines. I needed to get the hose off since they screwed off on the factory radiator but the new one didn't have that feature.
I will post pics when I get them uploaded to photobucket and will put in another reply posting.
