Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

going from reverse to drive

Post by ratchet » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:16 pm

ok my driveway sits on an incline around 10deg. When I back out from the driveway in reverse and then come to a stop and then go into drive my car will not kick into drive. I have tried, 1st, 2nd and they dont respond either. I can go into reverse. It will eventually come back and then its fine. RPM's will rev of course, but thats it. When it comes back its not a jolt, or a knock, it just shifts normal? I have no CEL on.

Ideas?

I was thinking Shift Solenoid

A 2000 does not have shift solenoids. You have a 31th ATX. It could be a band, or clutch pack seal going bad.

Usually it is a sign that the clutch pack seals are letting fluid by, thus the delayed engagement. A TC will also cause this, but it usually affects both reverse and drive, and will a lot of time, engage harshly when it does connect. The smooth hook up is from the seal gradually sealing. The filter could be clooged, but since it goes into reverse quickly, I wouldn't hope too much for a filter change to cure the problem.
