Replacing SXT spoiler with a hammerhead

Got a question on outside appearance modifications. Questions about body kits, exterior lighting, just anything thats a visual mod on the "exterior" of the car. Ask those questions here.

Replacing SXT spoiler with a hammerhead

Post by DetergentCandy » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:56 pm

Bought a very clean hammerhead spoiler off of Wheels04SXT

Image

I'm gonna sand and prime it myself. That's easy.
There's an auto body shop down the street from where I work that i'm gonna take it to and see how much they'll charge to squirt it black. Might be worth paying someone else to do it if it's cheap enough. Otherwise i'll do it myself. I'm pretty good with a rattle can

While I work on it and get it ready for painting, i'm gonna go wingless. Taking off my SXT wing and plugging the holes is gonna be easy. Black car + black rubber grommets = invisible! Mostly :P

So, to mount the hammerhead...where do I drill?
I assume these two bumps are where it's supposed to go.
Image
Correct?

I can find threads on how and where to mount an SXT spoiler...but nothing about hammerheads D:

Sit it on the trunk lid and measure. I'd guess those would be the spots.

If you're going to have a shop squirt it, DO NOT sand or prime it... They won't like that. Trust me. They don't like you doing any of the work (unless you know the person) They want to do it all themselves to ensure it's done properly. Every shop I got quotes at to have my SRT hood painted told me not to sand it down when I brought it in.

I bought the hammer head spoiler as a mopar accessory many years ago. It came with a paper template that you tape to the trunk lid and lines up the holes for you. Its large though. If I can find a way to make a copy of it, Ill make them available.

The paint is dull and bubbled under the wing on the driver side NOOOOOOOO :banghead:

Ugh. The right side looks alright. I think after another couple clay bar and wax jobs it should be pretty unnoticeable.
But the left side looks kinda bad in the right light :|

The hammerhead will cover up most of it...but I think it will still be visible a little bit. Bummer, man. That's a real bummer.

I had zero issues with my side moldings. Was hoping for the same luck!

Anyways, I lined the spoiler up with the bumps under the trunk, and that's NOT where they go. At least it doesn't look like it. They're not close enough for the bolts on the hammerhead. That, and I think the hammerhead is supposed to sit further back on the trunk than where those bumps would put it.

Sidepipe87: Thanks for the heads up! I'll just wait and talk to the shop tomorrow.

Mopar00Neon: I'd appreciate it, if you can! Will definitely make installation much easier! I'd feel way more confident with a template.

gtxtreme19: Hopefully your paint isn't bubbled, like mine! X_X

I already got my template out. Ill clean it up a little (dusty)... and try to get to Staples or something. Im not sure where I can make a copy of something so large.

Give me a couple days. Hopefully it wont cost too much. Its handy, but I cant help but think everyone who would want one, would want it for free. Im not made out of money. lol

Oh, I to install mine, it didnt line up with those bumps, and I actually had to take a hole saw (5/8" I think), and cut out some of the bracing for the nuts to hold the spoiler on.

I thought there was a template online that you could print out? I remember seeing some kind of spoiler template a couple years ago...

Sucks about the paint, but it's gonna happen to a car that's roughly 10 years old; could be worse.

JeffM: Ya, I was hoping after the clean side molding removal that i'd have the same luck with the spoiler x.x

So I took some pictures of the trunk, this morning.

Passenger-side
Image

Driver-side
Image

:(

I clay bar and waxed it last night. The white rings around the bolt holes is just left over wax cause I was in a rush and didn't clean it out >.>

But...is there anything I can do that will get rid of that white splotch? Looks like a rash.
Do you think it will fade from sitting in the sun, over time?
I just used regular Meguiar's gold wax. Will using Mequiar's black was help diminish it?

Looking straight down at the trunk you can't see it. But it's pretty visible at an angle. The hammerhead will cover up half of it...but it's still gonna be visible.

ALSO talked to the paint shop near work. They said they'd paint the spoiler for $75.
Now i'm not a professional painter, but i'm not a novice either.
I'm confident I can paint it myself. If I do, what's everyone's opinion on using Krylon? Krylon gloss black + plenty of clear + color sanding.
That's definitely the cheapest route.
Or, I can spend a little more and borrow my father's spray gun. That's obviously gonna take more prep time, clean up, etc. But it will look 10x better for sure.
Not saying Krylon won't look good. I just don't know how well it'll hold up to weather and outside conditions and all that.

Opinions?

$75 for a body shop to paint the spoiler is a good price.

For the size, $75 is pretty good. I wouldn't worry about the trunk paint too much; It looks like the clear is separating. The spoiler should cover it nicely.

Well, if that's the case, I may just wait until my eyelids ship, before painting the wing.
I'm waiting on these

They come unpainted, so maybe I can get the paint shop to do the spoiler and the eyelids for $80 or somethin' like that.

That's super cheap. If I were you I'd scrounge the local CL to see if anyone is selling a wingless black trunk lid. Or check car-part.com to see if any local yards have one.

I'll just put up with the blemish on this trunk, for now.
I don't even have the hammerhead on yet, so I can't be completely sure how it'll look or if you'll even notice it.

I'll keep an eye on CL though, just in case :D

If the weather was going to look more promising, I would take the carpet off mine and get you pics of the underside. The irony: My hammerhead was black, on a black R/T trunk lid. I still have the original PS2 lid w/out holes

And yeah, rattle can paint will fade or oxidize after a while. Without hardener, it is bound to fail. Might take a year or two depending on the paint. If you get some good durable clear to go over it, it may last. But for $75, it isn't worth the struggle.

I was gonna buy a black one off of xbrandonx, but Nick's local, and I wanted to help him out. But now I have to paint it :P
Anytime I got to the junkyard, all the useful/usable Neon parts are already taken :/

Definitely gonna have the shop paint it. My eyelids should be here in a few days, and they're just in primer. So i'm just gonna have the shop do it all.

Any luck finding a template for the hammerhead, anyone? I scourged Google, but no luck :(

I've got a mounted hammerhead. . . I could lay some huge-ass exam paper / sheets on the trunk, outline the trunk and mark the holes? It'd be STUPID basic but it'd give you an exact spot to tape down the template and drill. Hole size and all.

YES PLEASE

I think that's all the template is in the first place. Can't be any more complicated than that. If you do that, I will be more than willing to pay for the paper and the mailing costs :D

All you need to do is go to a newspaper printing place and they always have "end of rolls" of newspaper rolls. They usually have a TON of paper left on them. Usually they'll even give you them. Get one roll, make a gazillion templates from the original (of course it's all hand created though) fold em up, ship em out... Pretty easy, I'd do it if I didn't care about taking my car apart for no reason.

I wish I could get rid of my hammerhead for an SXT spoiler but I don't want holes and I don't want a new trunklid :(

I was worried about the holes for the longest time.
But i've been wingless for a month now...and I never notice. Even the paint blemish that I was worried about has faded and barely noticeable any more. I'll take pics when it's sunny out :D
