Low gas light?

Post by gcretro » Tue Mar 08, 2011 12:06 pm

2004 Neon SE.
Do my neon have a low gas light in the ins. cluster?

The gas gauge was getting close to 'E' but didn't see a gas light come on. (or is this not included in an SE).

IIRC, it is not available on the non tach clusters.

The cluster determines when the chime/light goes off based on the resistance from the sender.

hmm What chime are you referring to?

I am talking about the light when the gas gauge approaches "E".

This.

It will also flash once it gets really low.

This is good to know I was beginning to wonder the same thing. I have ran down the gas in my car a few times(not purposely). The last time it felt so low that I thought it was going to die on the way home. I thought the cluster was broke.

I found out that on an avenger, the low fuel light never flashes like it did on the neon, even when you run it out of fuel.

Ah. So the chime comes on when the gas gets really low?

I found the chime reminds me if I leave the parking brake on and drive forward. Pleasantly surprised that a base neon has this feature :D (my 03 Camry doesn't!)

Only on a cluster with a tach.

I have the tach, the car is an 03 sxt, so when its extremely low the light will flash? I know it comes on and chimes when it gets in the red, but does it flash within a certain miles of running out?

The real question is who ever lets their gas tank get below 1/2, I don't xD.

I've never noticed my light flash. I drive a lot of miles so most of the time I run it from full to empty and refuel.

I know it's hard on the fuel pump or whatever, but I see deep, deep gas light action every tank. Never got to the point where it flashes, but just having it on I've gone another 50 miles still.

So the gas light comes on when you have 50 miles till E? I know that if someone was able to make a gauge or scanner or something that told miles till empty I would so buy it!

It has no clue as to how many miles are left. To get the light to flash, you need to risk running out of fuel, depending on how the FP module is clocked in the tank. Moving it's position has been said to affect the gauge position.

A safer way would be to disconnect the connector, and wire up a spare sender, or variable resistor. Then slowly move it to empty. In playing with mine to attempt to turn off the misfire monitor, I could get it to flash. It is quite annoying.

And no, the experiment was not entirely successful. ('02 UDP CEL ) It worked fine, until the car was restarted, then it would turn on the P0302, or P0300 immediately at start up.

I read somewhere that Frank drove another 70-80 miles with the light on. It's all about how you drive, etc. . . Hard tellin' from one car to another. I know if I'm on a slight uphill and at a stop, I can get it to chime and come on, then next time I start the car it's off and the needle has moved. Slight positioning can mess with it's reading.

That being said, black-faced non-tach clusters have no fuel light indicator.

I drove all the way from the show field to TMI, to pizza hut, and then back to the hotel last year at Carlsile with my gas light on the whole time. I was super nervous because I was afraid I was going to run out of gas and everybody would have to stop and wait for me on the highway - instead, Sam took care of that.

So I don't know how much it holds once the light turns on, but it's pretty much enough gas to get you anywhere. Never seen it flash, though. Hell, even when it's on E I can never get more than 9.7-ish gallons in it.

Prolly including a bit of the filler tube, I have gotten a wee bit over 12 gallons in mine before. I figured I was pushing my luck, or the gas station is/was screwing ppl on the volume.

But the light never flashed... then again, I can't recall if that was before, or after the R/T cluster.

never seen the light come on, 02 sxt with tach cluster.. and I have had it empty a few times. I think the gauge is off because it reads like just below 1/4 tank and she'll take 10 gallons.

More likely a bad sender than an off gauge needle unless it was messed with, but yeah, doesn't sound quite right.

I don't think I'd ever make it 60 or 70 miles with the light on.

Maybe 40, but I would think that's pushing it.

I can't remember exact mileage but I have driven a lot of miles after the light comes on (over 60 comes to mind). I may try it on this tank and see what happens.

The Neon's gauge sucks, plain and simple. Mox messed with his when he did his S3 install and it got much more accurate.

Mine doesn't even go up to full anymore. Gotta check the clock position or if the floater rod got bent.

Light on for about 20 miles, takes 8.5 gallons to fill it up.

its a weekly occurrence for me to get the chime. Will drive it to flashing empy and feel comfortable going 20 miles before refueling. 370 miles per tank.

I've got an 05 Tach cluster in my RT and it has no gas light....
Typically when the light comes on you have aprox 2.5gallons left in the tank
