guyvers es project

Post by theguyver007 » Thu Mar 10, 2011 3:41 pm

Hello everyone. Im new to this forum but i have been on floridaneons,neons.org and srt forums for over 5 years recently bought a 2000 es mtx. Plan to work on the motor and boost it eventually. Im building up a head as my first step, once thats done im buying a spare block and puting in some .020 bored low compression turbo pistons, some nice rods, all new sensors so on forth basicly nrw everything... So far ive been porting out the exhaust ports on the head geting rid of the hump and smoothing it out as close to a polish as i can get it. My dremel took a dump so have to get a new one soon. Im short on time and got expensis like everyone so this may take a while for me to finish but ill be posting pics as i go along . If you guys have any questions feel free to ask. I plan on useing crane springs, mopar valves . I have yet to find good retainers and dont know what cam would be best for my setup. It is a sohc i dont want to do a 2.4 swap. I was thinking of the comp cam 400 hope its good for n/a as well as boost when i do boost the car. Opinions please, sugestions are also welcome. Here are some pics of my progress so far im not really fixed on one spot im moving around the whole head as i work on it it helps feel im moving along better lol. Enjoy..

Pics will be posted when i get on a desktop, currently on phone .

sounds like a good setup. From what I've hear (correct me if im wrong, people) crane 12's are decent on N/A builds with some bolt ons but meant for a turbo build, raises rpms faster I believe...
also remember someone saying comp cams were choice when installing on a less modified setup, of course, weilding less results...
10's i hear are pointless
14's are for BIG n/a builds (i think)
but the numbers i saw on the 12's looked like the best options to me
(thinking about doing some of the same stuff as well)

Best of luck with your project man!

Thanks cook =) As far as the cam , not sure if i mentioned this already but im still not 100% sure which one i want, I like holding gears for as long as i can, if the cam 12 revs faster i dont think i want that cam... Im hopeing the 400 is good for boost so far looks like its a good upgrade for N/a with mods, ported exhaust and polished with crane valve springs so on so forth... I only have this one car so anything i do has to be done within 2 days =/ So i plan on doing my timeing belt change once im done with the head and puting in the built up head and runing that till im done with the motor and turbo setup. Plan on runing with MS. Here are some pics of my progress. In no specific order...

A car that Erick built (he's on here, I forget his name) made 545HP with a comp 400 cam, revving to 8K? I think. You'll like the 400.

I have a 400 Dremel that has done two heads so far plus other duties and is still going strong. It does get hot tho.

If you don't plan on revving past 7200, the Magnum valve springs will work just fine with a 400 cam. They are a bit cheaper than Cranes. And come with retainers.

In N/A form, the 400 is out of the powerband well before 7200 anyways.

UPDATE!!!

I ordered the 400 cam from summit.Friday april 15th, had it over night payed 42 bucks in shipping fees!! only to have ups send the package back because my zipcode was incorrect.... Im furious... Mostly because i missed a day of work to recieve the damn box, payed for OVER NIGHT!!! and im getting it a week later... GRRRRRRR so i was told i should get it monday TOMORROW!! April 18th? Yet i look at the tracking its already back Up in Louisville Ky... so its being sent back to summit... Oh man.... ANyhow..

The magnum springs i cant seem to get a the local dodge.. Theyve told me in some cases they dont supply them anymore, others told me they dont know when theyll get em.. I dont wanna pay for something they arnt sure theyll get.. lol THo they are cheap.. 80s bucks for the setof 16, tho i wasnt aware they came with retainers as mention above... Ill have to ask and make sure...

Got a question ... For the dohc bottom end would , i keep my sohc timeing components correct? and is it worth the swap to have a dohc bottom with a sohc head ported, with the 400 cam... Or should i just shave my head down to .030? Again in about 2 maybe 3 years lol there is a turbo setup going on....

Im keeping my sohc head... there is no way im doing dohc lol
I guess im still pondering wether i should build my motor up or just get a dohc motor ...

Im sure N/a i can make good hp with lots of mods...

Thanks

dohc bottom with sohc head = higher compression if you mill the head it will bump up your compression even higher. A built dohc will make more power than a built sohc so weigh out your options and go from there

Wow.. Good luck on that man.. hope you win =)

Got my cam a few hours ago. looks good super happy right now. lol except for the fact that Dodge no longer makes magnum valve springs due to the bankrupt thing with dodge? "according to sales rep at Moparsupercenter"... im stuck buying the crane valves springs off modern, even better but thats an extra 50 bucks?

anyhow im at a loss as to the Dohc Bottom end... Would i gain any power out of it ? or out of shaveing off .020 from the head?

Sooo...

Ported, polished head, Comp400, crane valve springs , indy valves stnd, long tube header and dohc bottom end what am i looking at in numbers here?

Update! Here are some pics of. My status.. the only side i really opened up was the exhaust the intake runners ive only smoothed out possibly polish them .

With a milled head, a comp 400, an intake manifold, and a long tube header, you're probably looking at 150-160 whp. More with an aftermarket ECU like an AFX or MS.

If you're doing boost though, I wouldn't mill the head, or use a dohc bottom end. You want the compression as low as you can for boost.

Looking for a cam gear now...
gotta get the head shaved, i think the time it spent in my trunk it moved around a bit and besides a few scratches it got a nasty dent. Hope it gets shaved off otherwise i may have to get another head =( restart everything GRRR...

still to do...
1:Shave head
2:Purchase all seals and gaskets
3:Purchase cam gear
4:Purchase all belts
5:Possibly get ODP and UDP

I really dont wanna go through all that grinding again.. If i cant use it im not even gonna bother geting another head im just gonna install everything on my current head and leave it as is no porting..

I dont think thats bad enough to cause any trouble. I dont think the gasket gets that close to the opening anyway. I would make sure it wont interfere with the block at all.

Any machinists in your area?? Id send that over to them to be totally cleaned out before install and have them check out that dent!!

until you're boosting, dont worry about fuel pressure. if you get a fuel return line kit, like the AGP kit, it will come with a fuel pressure gauge, which should NEVER be installed inside the car to begin with....

NA i wouldnt really worry about extra gauges unless you plan on making it an all out drag car, which i can tell you're not.

when you go boosted, if you wanna use pump gasoline, go low compression, so dont mill the head if you dont have to... if you wanna switch to E85, then screw it, bump up the compression so you can take better advantage of the knock resistance of E85...

my build consists of 8.6:1 dohc pistons(which are 9:1 with the sohc head), .030" milled head, giving me about 9.4:1 and you can still go a little higher and be safe w/ the right tuning. whichever road you go, just make sure you do it right the first time or you'll regret it...

I got the head back from the machine shop asked them to remove .020 now im seeing some little holes between cylinders hope thats normal.. as i was reading... stock compression is 9.8:1 on my year neon... if i shaved the head what compression will i have... ?

***Update***

I guess no one ever answered my question...

Since i moved i havent been able to get back on this again, Short on funds too... got the cam in the head , springs, valves , just need the lifters, not sure if i should use the one on the old head ill be taking off.. got pics and will be taking many more pics as i go ... should be geting back on this within a month or so....

Dunno... Any ideas on the oil pump wether i should or shouldnt? Got the oil pressure switch since its gonna be easy to get to with the head off as well... new sensors are always plus i think ...
