Key sets
Key sets
I am thinking of getting a new ignition key set for my car, but not sure how it will all work. It's not like on my old 71 Nova with few wires, but I do know that from the dealership it will include the ignition, 2 doors, and the trunk. I am wanting to replace the ignition since I lost the original key, and it's starting to stick when turn it to start the starter.

not quite what I was expecting, but I am sure that going directly to a dealership I can find what I'm looking for. funny how it's $100 for the ignition key, but have all the parts to rekey the cylinder for all of the other tumblers!

You don't even need to re key the doors. Just have one side of the key cut to the doors/trunk, and the other for the ign switch. Just notch one side of the key head, so you can tell by feel which side is for the doors/ign.
What color is the key, black or gray? If it is gray, you will also need the new key programmed.

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.

Are you pulling my chain here. Is there a way to tell what side of the key the cylinder is using.occasional demons wrote:You don't even need to re key the doors. I would need to check to be sure, but I think it is the top side. The lock cylinder only uses one side of the key.
I doubt you could get it cut that way at Wal Mart tho. Their machines are set to be idiot proof. IDK if it would read both sides and cut them accordingly, or just pick up one side.

the reason I wanted to know is that I know a lock smith who still has a machine that cuts one side at a time. The reason is that my key is worn enough that if I put it in one way it does not play nice but if I do it the other way its ok. So I could get him to cut the good side twice and not have to fiddle with it.

Should be able to, just don't flip the original when he cuts it.

ok, haven't had an issue with my ignition key for a while, and now it's starting to do it again with a newly cut key and even the old one.
Found a new key set from Rockmart Auto for less than 50$.
Might do that and just use the same keys since it worries me in the case of a zombie outbreak!

I missed this the first time around, so let me see if I can shed some light on this.
If your ignition cylinder is wearing out, buy a new one. If you get one from the dealer, it will be uncoded. The price for coding the cylinder will vary greatly depending on where you go. When I worked for a dealer years ago, I would charge $25.00 to code a cylinder (or nothing if I liked you). The last Dodge dealer I worked for charged $100.00 to code them. I'm glad I kept all my lock coding supplies. I still only charge $25.00.
I haven't seen a Dodge cylinder sold with a key before, but I'm sure they exist. If you do go that route and get on with a key, just do like Bill suggested and have one side of a key cut to your old code and the other side cut to the new code. You can then mark one side of the key so you know what way to turn it for which lock.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Or you could get a set from ebay. There is a link for all the locks, except for the trunk, in this thread: viewtopic.php?p=932530&highlight=#932530
