Which One?

Post by iThane » Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:15 pm

I friggin love my new exhaust, but its more important that i tone it down.
so i found two 31" glasspacks but not sure which one looks more
promising. whats your opinion?

this one?

or this one?

for those who don't know, i just replaced my stock sxt muffler for an
srt rear section. its rediculously loud and i love it, but i doubt
everyone else does too.

The Dynomax "Thrush" GP was what I had. Didn't do much.

Believe it or not, blocking one side quiets it down more than anything else. You aren't really losing any flow, as it isn't any smaller than the inlet.

damn... how did you go about blocking the one side? just welding
it shut or something? i want to tone down the sound, but i still
want it louder than, lets say, an rt setup.

I had cut the tips off, and had an aluminum plug in one end. (Press fit) There was a 3/8" hole in the middle, so I could remove it.

This was only a temporary set up, until I got my current exhaust on. I removed the plug, and welded the tips back on, before I traded it to cbjones for my cruise control.

If you could get something to fit inside the tip, and painted it black, it may not be too obvious. But just what, that would fit past the lip, and snug up is the tricky part.

But it was a lot quieter with one outlet. The dead pipe acts sort of like a sound chamber.

Found the video i was talkin about earlier, OhNoA2.0 had posted a
video "nanci neon" and i remember reading something about a
cherry, which turned out to be his dingle berry.. lol. he's got a rear
srt section too, but sounds like nothings being used to tone it down.

Nanci Neon

nicksdad06 - yup, thats pretty much what mine sounds like too lol.

Manny - i started looking at some cherry bombs and you're right,
they look pretty much like the same deal. yet somehow they are
priced cheaper..

i think i'm gonna try out the cherry bombs, and if it doesn't satisfy
me, i'll sell it on craigslist and try the modern muffler :D

Here's when I had the 25" Glasspack. Now running an 8" and I gotta say, the shorter the better.

Here's a pretty good clip right in the beginning and sort of through-out the video.

Here's an older shittier one. The green days...

The Cherryombs have a nice loud growl up close and a subaru-like purr in the distance. I also had Cherrybombs on the side exits and they have a very bearable amount of drone right next to your ear.

the shorter the better as in sound or loudness? lol

i unded up getting a 30" glasspack so i guess we can compare our
videos to see what kind of difference the extra length makes. i
should have it on by next week

I had the same problem with the exhaust on my 2000 ES. The stock muffler was tooooooo quiet, but then again I didn't want to annoy the neighbors or leave it the way it was. My '99 neon sport sounded good with a flowmaster intended for a V8 Camaro other than being a bit loud. I went to the local muffler shop and asked what would be best. The answer was simple, a stainless steel Magnaflow muffler for a-----wait for it-----V8 Camaro. I didn't even have to add anything to the exhaust to keep it from backfiring etc. The tone is deep, smooth, and not ricey. The only thing is, it does drone at certain speeds. Good Luck with your decision.

Of course, none of those will work with the SRT rear section. If you want the look, but get tired of the noise, you can always cut the tips off, and have them welded onto the outlets of a Camaro type muffler.

I used the V6 Camaro muffler. To be honest, at times it sounds almost like a Z24 Cavalier. FWIW....
