Speed alone has nothing to do with arriving alive. Paying attention and adjusting the the conditions do.
^Yea, that's what I was trying to say, but better.

What really pisses me off is when I see women (always in an SUV that they DON'T NEED, of course) on their cell phones, scooting through traffic like they're queen of the world in PARKING LOTS. This to me is the epitome of selfishness. Pedestrians are everywhere in parking lots and these pricks just fly through them to rush home to their families. Well I have a family, too, god damn it, and if you run over my little brother in a parking lot because you're too obsessed with your own phone calls and bullshit, I swear you'll be begging to taste Dominic Toretto's wrench by the time I'm done pulverizing your cell phone ass into the pavement!
... whew... but that's just my traffic pet peeve.

I don't "Speed", but I go over the speed limit.

8/10 cars I see on my daily commute break the law. Get over it. Just because you are breaking one of the dumb laws doesn't mean you are not driving "safe".

There is a 4 lane highway here, probably 7 miles long maybe? It connects two little plazas together. 35mph speed limit. Ridiculous.

Agreed.

I'll tap the brake just enough to light the light, but not really slow down. Most of the time that works.

NEVER slam the brakes, all that will do is put your ass in the hospital.

I won't brakecheck anyone, but I will apply the brakes "with some effort" and slow way down.

TheRandom1 wrote:To an extent, Frank is right though Nick. In and around the city if you aren't doing 15-20 over the limit on the highway (slow lane or not) you are the problem. (not you personally, but in general)

Personally, I just do about 75 on the highways, and don't have much issue. It's fast enough near Chicago that I'm not getting tailgated, yet slow enough everywhere else that cops mostly won't mess with me.

On regular roads, however, I keep it to no more than 5 over nowadays.

I also don't text while driving anymore. If it can't be read/replied to at a stop light, it can wait or I can pull over.

I fully believe that people talking on the phone aren't incapable of doing two things at once, they're just focusing too much on the wrong thing. When driving, that should be the #1 priority, not your phone call, and that's how I drive if I'm on the phone.
Correct, and Understood.

That's why I qualified my statement with, "the 'driving culture' is such that speeding all of the time and tailgating like mad".

On the Interstates, going 15MPH over may not be a problem.... but put down your damn cell phone and DON'T tailgate, if you are going to drive that fast.
Around here, cell phone driving and speeding seem to go hand in hand !!

Also, folks around here, get off the Interstate, and then proceed to go blasting down the Secondary roads, at 15-20MPH over the limit.... Tailgating just the same.
It doesn't matter if it is raining, foggy, below freezing (possible black ice conditions) or visibility is poor.

On the Interstate, going 15 over + tailgating may not be as hazardous, but it is definitely a hazard, on the Secondary roads.

People driving while talking on their cell phones is my biggest pet peeve. I am always barking at drivers to buy a hands free device for their vehicle. (yes I do bark at traffic while driving, keeps me from blowing up at people.) Anyways... The cost of buying a hands free device is a lot better than the cost of lives affected due to an idiot causing an accident.

I do talk on my phone, by either my GPS or the handset, but my phone conversation is always secondary to my driving.

I really don't understand people that are doing the whole arm gestures as if they were in their office or something.

It's somewhat related...... to the culture of excessive speeding, and gabbing on the cell phone, and tailgating.

Cell phone driving, and other bad driving habits, all go hand in hand.

Even the half naked girls with neon thread gets sidetracked every now and then. If that can't stay on topic, can you really expect some thing that doesn't involve nookie or food to hold our attention spans? :)

I wasn't picking on Nick solely here Frank, Nick or anyone. I am saying it to anyone who speeds. Knows they are speeding and then bitch or have some excuse to why they were breaking the speed limit. It is a driving pet peeve of mine.

Yes I have sped. I got a ticket for the one time I did. 9kms over. I wasn't paying attention. talking to my friend in the car. I didn't argue, lie or make excuses other than when the cop asked me I said "i was talking to my friend and wasn't paying attention...I'm sorry." Cop gave me the ticket. I said thanks, have a safe night officer, and it wouldn't happen again.
I have since not been ticketed. and yes i'm sure i've gone over but I do my damdest to stay in the limit.

So in closing, I meant it as a general statement to anyone who does something wrong and then makes a post about it. some of us may have reasons why we don't like speeding/drinking and driving. or whatever when it comes to vehicles. I being a volunteer and former full time fire fighter amd tired of MVA cause of silly things like doing 10-30 over the limit. It's senseless and there is no excuse. Thats why.

So if Nick or anyone took this personal. I didn't mean it that way. I meant it for anyone and everyone that does this or anything else they know is "wrong" but the other drivers do it so it's socially acceptable. It's not...the law and tickets say so....but anyway. Im done and again sorry anyone took it as a personal attack on anyone.

I agree, if you get pulled over suck it up and deal with it. You have a couple of options and maybe there will be leniency from the judge, but beyond that it is what it is.

However, if the cops don't do anything about it then it's a little different. Doesn't really make it right, but does it truly make it wrong?

Dude, the ratio of cars to trucks/SUV's around here in the mountains of PA is easily 1:5. Almost every road has lines of SUV's crowding it, EMPTY SUV's. Now I know, some of them actually haul things with their trucks or carry 3-4 kids in the back and that's cool, but almost all of them are just a single person with a huge empty vehicle behind them. To me, it just seems like a waste, especially when that same person complains about gas prices. If I needed a people carrier, but I didn't need the torque to tow a trailer or the ground clearance to go off-roading, I would definitely get a Magnum R/T and not waste money and space on an SUV or truck.

I guess it's all up to preference, though. Even though I'm a bigger guy, I still prefer to be cramped into a small car rather than drive a huge truck that I never use to its full potential.

It's absolutely stupid. Watching drivers commuting (ALONE) in a huge, empty SUV, while gas reaches $5.00 gallon.
Who the Hell are they to complain, for contributing to high gas prices ??

Oh, and not to mention, speeding in their stooopid SUV, while talking on the cell phone.

I agree with Uriahh on the SUV issue. Except here, it's college girls in Pathfinders and Explorers and shit. My thing is MPGs, though. So what if you can haul 4 of your girl friends to a party? I can haul 3 comfortably, a 4th if he's small and doesn't care, and STILL get 10+ mpg than you. Haha.

Damn this thread is off track.

6 months? How long did you lose it for the first time? Normally the time period extends for 2nd and 3rd offense. I always thought it was 6 months first offense, year 2nd and so on...

If it was 6 months last time, I'm betting it's AT LEAST a year this time. Probably more since you're still underage.
