1996 Neon ACR sedan

Post by INVUJerry » Fri Apr 15, 2011 3:09 pm

Well, I bought this last month, drove the car about 400 miles and the timing belt tensioner pulley broke. I tried to re-time the motor to see if it survived, but the cam went from dead on to 180 off. Regardless, it died. Anyway, I was going to put the head from my NYG's stock motor onto it, until yesterday.

I had went to Redmond's junkyard in Pasadena, MD. I was walking around with my buddy, and I happened across a neon. It was a red 2gn. Then, I noticed the dual tipped muffler. Went into the bay, and saw the RT motor stuff. I thought, man, I wanna buy the head and intake. I went inside and talked to the guys there. They said I needed to check if it said OK or NO. No means I can't pull parts off of it, OK means, I can. I went back, it didn't say either. Told the guy behind the counter that. Without either writing on it, it meant that the motor hadn't been started, so they couldn't sell it with a warranty. He said he'd sell it as a "core" for $200. That included both magnum manifolds, and the alternator, PS and AC pump. I tried to show that I was totally unimpressed with this and bought it. Took it home today, I'll have pics of the motor up later. Here's a few pics of the car that the previous owner took.

That's all for now. Plans are, put the mag motor in it, put drop springs on it, get the butterfly valves to work, and drive the doors off of it. Maybe I'll get a mopar computer later on down the road, but with gas prices going up, who knows what I'll do.

Damn man, nice find! The ACR is in great shape :D

I hate you for your junkyard find though :cussing:
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Gonna be my daily. The SRT is only getting like 24. This was getting around 34 before I broke it. New motor, with a done up exhaust should get me about the same, while going low 15's, potentially high 14's if I drive my ass off.

I really really really want to delete the AC, and the power steering, but I don't think my wife is going to let me this time. We'll see what I can get away with.

I told you to get that timing fixed
Next time your at the yard, grab me the last 8 digits of the vin of that 2GN so I can see what you actually found. It's very rare to find a magnum engine in the junkyard....great find otherwise

Holy moly, thanks Chris. Thinking of going back for the struts for the SRT. Not sure it'd be worth the hassle.

Well, the car is currently sitting on a tow dolly, the motor is in the back of my truck. It's being delivered to it's new owner tomorrow. I'll post a farewell pic tomorrow and then you can close the thread.

The car is going to AdamG's friend, not sure if he's on the forums. He rode with Adam in the 09 Carlisle. He's got a decent plan for the car, so it's going to a good home.
