painting/installing door handles

Post by apk2k6 » Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:18 am

I picked up some painted door handles at the junkyard yesterday for $20 because I have the black textured ones and would like some to match my car. So now all I have to do is get these painted and put them on : ), I've called a couple places so far, and Maaco said it'd be around $150 to paint them, and a local shop said it'd be $75 plus materials. Does this sound about right? Because that seems expensive for handles that are already removed from the car just to paint, but idk haha.

Also, when I removed the handles from the other car at the junkyard, the rods connected to it had a rubber piece that went through a hole in the handle ensuring a good fit so it didn't move around. Well these were a pain to remove so I just ripped the rubber off since I didnt need it, how could i remove my handles on my car now without tearing this rubber off since I will need it.

Wow I hope that made sense, hopefully anyone who has installed door handles understands that.

But might not match, and it wont last as long as having it professionally done. Thats the cheap way out, yes, but it will cost you more over time having to redo it in the future. Whatever you do, dont go to maaco....I dont know about there, but here, they are known for very cheap paint jobs. Id just avoid it all together.

Is that the cost for paint plus install? If it is, thats not a bad price....its alot more work than you would think, even just to paint something as small as door handles. Even if its not including install, thats still not too bad, at least you know it will get done right the first time

Ya, the guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so I may go there. I'd rather have it done right the first time.

I definately don't want to paint them myself, because if the shop messed it up I could always take it back for them to fix it.

One, maaco is a rip off, its crap imo.
Two, a local shop it cost me $35 to paint one door handle factory color so not exact matched and it still came out very good. Your car should be new enough still not to worry ALOT about sun fade and stuff ud have to alter factory paint for.

ok well MAACO is NOT a rip off. You can have whatever opinion you want...anyway I would charge at least an hour for install and about $35.0 paint for each handle, no guarantee 100% colour match.

Maaco isnt a rip off, I've seen some damn nice work come outta Maaco, however they also spent a couple thousand and not the $299 paint job.
Seriously, they CAN do good work if you PAY them to do it..

Granted, the "budget" paintjobs are shit, and should be treated accordingly.

There ya go, it isnt Maaco...it's the individual that expects showroom finish and only has 250.00$$ My car was painted there. Ya know the old saying" you get what you pay for". It doesnt matter what shop you go to, if you dont have the money or the knowledge to prep it yourself....it is NOT gonna look good or last. Anyway sorry to have sidetracked this post. I hope you find a good shop to help get your door handles painted and installed. My best advice is to look around, dont go or not go to a shop just because someone "heard " that a particular shop was bad. Later

Ya true, I'm going to look around a little bit more, to make sure I can get the best quality for the best price.
