Help in NY installing turbo

Post by EDieter » Wed Apr 27, 2011 8:54 am

Anyone in the watertown or rochester area that can help me install a stage III turbo on my 2002 sxt? Before i get a millions replies saying OMG STAGE III ON AND AUTO your stupid. I have TONS of plans to upgrade engine internals and i got a SWEEEEEEET deal on a Stage III for 3100 from hahn racecraft. So I plan on running low boost until I get upgraded internals and all the fun stuff. I need help with most installation and tuning. I'm pretty sure I can get the setup on my car with help from my mechanic friends, but no one really knows how to tune it. I would take it to a shop and have them do it but don't feel like spending close to 1000 in labor costs. Besides I want to learn how to do this anyways. I haven't placed my order but I will soon and it'll be a couple of weeks before it comes in the mail. We can take a weekend and go crazy with it, I'll bring the beer. The plans I have for this car are pretty sweet!! I'm super excited. My car only has 53k miles on it and thats awesome for an 02.

unfortunately there's nothing you can really do to "tune" the hahn kits because there's nothing in the equation that you can mess with other than if you would run MegaSquirt...

Your hahn kit SHOULD come with a PortFueler system which is a plate with an extra set of injectors so that the PCM doesn't have to adjust for boost... You're almostly guaranteed to get a check engine light though...

I wish you the best of luck though...

Yeah it will have PortFueler included. I wasn't even sure it needed a tune, but I've always heard of people tuning their system so I was just being cautious. If I were to buy Megasquirt would that help with any CELs? Also any CELs without Megasquirt, would they need to be worked around assuming the kit is installed correctly and a CEL pops? Or is it just inevitable?

Good old NY inspections, welcome to what I've been dealing with. I've personally used the eManage Blue to try to keep emission friendly and add fuel when needed for boost but it did not really work that way. I personally have not tried using the port fueler but I do know that if you try to add additional fuel using Aux injectors our pcm's are going to pull fuel on the main injectors trying to keep a "Stoich" air fuel ratio.
The best thing is to get MS and run that until its time for inspection and then run the stock pcm with no boost to keep the check engine light off to pass NYS inspection....

I thought MS was a full stand alone epu compeletely replacing the cars pcm. How are cel's even showing when MS does not even have them programmed in? If I have been under a false impression that MS was a stand alone system and its still a piggy back that lets you have full control what systems are a complete relplacement allowing you to fully remove the stock pcm?

it all depends on how you wire it. MS can be a full standalone system, it doesnt throw CEL's but it wont pass emissions test. you can also wire it to just control fuel and spark, in which case its sort of a piggy back. unless you wire in extra injectors and crap you will get CEL's because the stock computer doesnt see those items anymore.

Couldn't I just run no boost for an inspection reguardless of if i have MS or not? Say I installed the turbo and ran no boost as if I wanted it on there for looks would that throw cel's and fail emmisions?

If the PCM isn't controlling what MS is controling, you will have a CEL.

The PCM needs to stay in the car to control some systems even if you are on MS. That's where the problem comes in.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Just an update, got my turbo in this week and started installing with some of the guys I work with. Got fuel pump installed, oil drain taps, manifold is off, started some pipe work, FPR is set to install, as well as turbo. BUT i guess they forgot to send me my freaking manifold gasket and full downpipe. What they consider a down pip is about 10 inches long from hot side to cat converter that by the way doesnt match up. 2 hole flange on"downpip" to a 4 hole stock cat converter. Awesome

i am in the hornell area... i would have been willing to help with the install but that is a long haul. sounds like u have a good hold on it though. good luck with the install.

and to get ms to pass nys inspections is about a ten min process.. very simple if it is wired correctly. ten min job once a year to pass inspections i have been doing it for three years now. with no problems.

i have been working with on something that may cause that ten min to be zero min.

ms you can wire as a piggy backsystem the problem comes when the ms has to take full control over the injectors and coil. that harness has to be cut and therefor throws your cel. for no injector fire and coil fire. all that is needed is to add a disconted (six wires in total) that u can unplug and plug back in, swap injectors and drive till monitors are clear. then get home and reverse the procedure.

Woot I finished yesterday! Although after driving it back to the house I realized I never tightened my oil drain line but no biggie. Only code I got is a p1684. Should fix it soon.
