volt getting 1000 miles to a tank at 111mpg

Yeah, sorry MO but it's clear by the way you type and speak that you're "smarter" than most everyone else on here, but you're barking up the wrong forum. Look at the builds on here, and all the cars in Kyle's sig. We aren't too concerned with the environment around here. You're on a forum where people will get massive deals on cars, drop $5-$6k in them to boost them and give them mad power (and black smoke and flames), then brag about achieving 30+ mpg STILL. All the while, still spending under $10k total for the build.

Welcome to THIS forum.

Neon - every point
Volt - none.

You've got sound arguments, but like Kyle said it boils down to money, and this forum isn't the place where that sort of cash flows around for people to "try the car out."

Did anyone stop to think about how much charging a volt or the likes is going to cost in the long run. It will be just like the gas companies now raising gas prices, and we use electricity more!

If you simply cannot afford to buy a car like this that's fine. I understand not everyone can drop 40k but if you can and want to help out in a small way this is one avenue.

Otherwise.


Car pool.

Use the Bus.

Ride a Bike.

Walk.


Much cheaper than your expensive 1,000 dollar neon bank buster.

And. You get to call 'shotgun' with your buds!

Prices go up, that's life. Using sustainable methods to produce electricity solves this. Well, until we reach the Earth's carrying capacity...but that is another can of worms.

Yea I understand and trust me, I've heard it all before. I drive far less then most, don't drive an suv that gets 10mpg, and actually ride my bike quite often.

To me I'm doing my share of helping the environment, compared to many people. Until things get worse, I have no intentions of changing any of my routines.

My buddy went out and bought a brand new Toyota Yaris. It's getting 50MPG without much in the way of modifications. It's comfortable to drive, has all the options, etc. I'm going "green" by recycling my old car vs buying a new car that used all new parts to begin with.

Hybrids are cool, I'll admit it, I'd drive one if I could afford a new one. I do carpool with people at work, walk where I can, etc. My SRT also barked flames for a while, and my NYG will be able to pass emissions without a cat.

The only claim I'm disputing is the 111mpg claim, or even the 90MPG they claim on the sticker. It's not true. It gets awesome gas mileage if you plug it in, and don't burn gas. It gets 37 MPG according to the EPA, and that's if you run premium. And with gas prices looking like they're going down again in the near future, it looks like the cost is going to widen again with a bias towards gas only cars.

If you're so concerned about being green and all that, why don't you buy a chevy volt?

I'm not sure if this is directed at me or not but I assume I can respond regardless.

My argument is not that 'everyone' need to buy a volt, carpool, bike, eat organic etc.. everyone does different things and has different lives.

For car enthusiasts which are a large portion of this forum I would personally suggest none of us concern ourselves with gas mileage. We enjoy making our cars performance oriented for the most part and having fun driving fast, reving high and doing things that are not associated with good gas mileage.

To my main point though is I know many people who literally dislike having to get in a car everyday to go to work. They hate the costs of driving, the time and most of all do not enjoy it. It is literally a device to get to point 'A' to point 'B'. For these people I am a HUGE advocator of 'Multi-Modal Mass Transit System' Bus, Light Rail, and Heavy Rail Transportation system best seen in Japan or Portland in the USA. And regardless of our need for them they are actually an amenity to have making life easier whether or not you drive a car.

Now, because I do not see myself ever buying or caring about high mileage or emissions regulations on my personal car the route I plan on taking is much more effective than car change anyway.

As I linked before building energy efficiency is the biggest source of energy consumption on this planet period. I plan on making my place of residence after graduation both energy positive, meaning I will generate energy (via solar panels and geothermal water lines) and not just be energy neutral. As well I plan on having zero storm water runoff, the thing that causes things like this in your local stream which most people have no clue about.

So that's what I plan on doing as an overall plan but again what you do is situational but your home is the 'biggest' impact you can change period on your personal 'turf' so to speak.

You are 100% correct. I believe the EPA does not have a way to accurately calculate true usage when a car has as much electric power as the Volt does.

I saw a unit in Motor Trend that more accurately described the energy usage for all cars (gas & electric), forget exactly what it was. kW/mile maybe, but the EPA isn't testing to that. They had to design a test in the first place to even test the Volt comparatively.

In time there will be a more reasonable number on the sticker.




All this doing good for the environment by driving a Volt is 100% bullshit anyways. You have to make those batteries somewhere and batteries are far from clean to make.

Solar power is just not efficient enough.
Hydro-electric is pretty good depending on how much of a change in elevation there is from where the water starts vs where it leaves.
Nuclear power is the most feasible energy source, IF using Breeder reactors. In which the Uranium and Plutonium rods used can be "re-charged" where as right now they are frowned upon for many reasons such as we deposit our spent fuel rods into a land-fill basically. That and there hasn't been a new licensed nuclear reactor since the 1970s i believe, it could be the 60s however.
you're forgetting the pebble-bed reactor. 100% fail-safe ;)
