What the hell?! CPS magnet.

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

What the hell?! CPS magnet.

Post by titansxt » Sat May 21, 2011 11:53 am

So I was going to change out my magnet along with my CPS. My magnet screw came out maybe a third of the way and just stopped coming out as if it became cross threaded. So I tried to put it back in and it decided it did not want to so the head began to strip. I tired a bunch of things to get the screw out or in and nothing worked. So I finally just used a larger bit and was able to get it back in without changing the magnet.

Anyone know a reason why it would get stuck like that? The engine was a bit warm from driving it earlier. I'm guessing the head and the screw were at two different temps and thats why it was such a pain in the ass. Has anyone experienced this when changing their magnet?

Does anyone have an extra CPS magnet screw I could have. The dealer does not service that screw.

If it started to come out easy then got tough most likely the thread lock from the factory. recently had the same problem with the balancer when I torn down the SRT. My bolt came out with some extra force. i then took a tap filled the chip grooves with grease and cleaned the threads. I was surprised how much thread lock was in there.

As far as a bolt just pick one up from your local hardware store.

What I want to know is why you were changing the magnet. Was it damaged in some way? You don't ned to change it when you do the CPS.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

A lot of folks on SRT forums say to change it while you change the sensor.

What The Hell? CPS magnet

Unless the magnet is loose or broken there is no reason to mess with it. If it aint broke, don't fix it in my opinion. Was the CPS throwing a code or were you just being proactive? I have found that if you only do routine maintenance on a Neon they seem to run better longer.

At least we know that the thread lock would have worked :D

Chrysler paid for my new fuel pump assembly, a crank/cam positioning and target magnet.

Why not put them in?!

I went to the junkyard today and pulled two new bolts out of wrecked cars. They came out very very easy.

boostalot717, I saw a lot of junk on the threads of the ones I pulled today. I'm assuming thats the locker. I'll try removing mine again one day when the engine is cold to see if that helps the removal.

A magnet will never "wear out", so changing it if it isn't damaged is just a plain waste of $ and effort. If it got cracked somehow, then yes, it will mess with the PCM's mind. My target magnet and CPS both have 165,000 miles on them.

Maybe boost alters their magnetic state.

Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.
