Wow! finally got to hear IM secondaries opening! Video

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Wow! finally got to hear IM secondaries opening! Video

Well , I guess for most R/T owners this is no big deal ( been there done that you guys will say ) but today is the first day I've experieced it. I had mounted a K & N filter onto my IM TB ,but left the MAF sensor in the original position, and the air resonator box cover on. Not much of a performance increase was noticed. So today I took off the cover, then mounted the MAF sensor in the K & N intake for better air flow measurement.

Big difference in sound and acceleration!

Listen @ 0:07 sec then at 0:12 and 0:15sec ( approx ) which is also at 5000RPMs. Not a speed run at all, but simply a gently rolling start in 2nd gear to fourth gear then ease off throttle . Kind of neat to hear the change in engine sound when the secondaries snap open @ 5000RPM. Top speed was only 80MPH due to poor road conditions.Angle of camera makes it look like less than 80MPH and less than 5000 RPM.

He might be thinking of the Air Temp Sensor. If so, it doesn't matter where you put that thing. I had mine laying on the frame rail for quite a while and it made no difference.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Ummm OK forgive me for using a wrong term , I'll be more scientific

" the sensor thingie that was attachd to the FRONT of the curved
air intake"

How's that?

Sheesh! you really need to READ what you print . Provacative and unnecessary.

My most humble apologies.....Dude

Little off topic, but when I forgot to plug mine into the connector before, my battery light would come on and stay on. Was this normal? Anyone else ever have that problem? No CEL appeared so it took me forever to troubleshoot. Thank god I never purchased a new battery lol.. Car ran fine, just had a battery light on and got worried before doing a long distant travel .llol

I could hear mine also with the resonator box cover on also even in the "quiet" highways of West Virginia. Really is quite noticeable though with the cover off. In fourth gear ( perhaps 3rd also ) I seem to get a longer or 2nd opening of the IM secondaries. Probably my imagination.

I shot the video ( well, actually my 22 y/o son did it ) just to document the opening of the secondary IM intakes , because of the help I had gotten here in testing them .

An interesting and effective bit of engineering for increased HP gains. Whether or not DCX or Honda's is more effective , is up for debate

THanks for looking at the video and commenting

Unless you use a hood with some kind of scoop on it, you're actually going to decrease power having the cover off. I know it sounds crazy, but with the cover off you're just sucking in all of the hot air from inside the engine bay.

Makes sense that resonator cover off would decrease power

Post by mobay1517 » Tue May 24, 2011 11:02 am

Makes sense that resonator cover off would decrease power due to sucking in hotter air in engine compartment versus thru "snorkle" the sucks from hole on top of fender.

However , I SWEAR that the cars power seems much better with it off. Now...... that could ( and probably is ) purely a psychological effect. You suddenly go from a quiet sound to now hearing a growl, a aggressive intake "whooosh " and the IM secondaries opening.

That's probably it and like a dope , I did not do an "A" compared to "B" test. Too lazy to do it now.

With that said though, I was in an area where one can go well past 100MPH ( isolated from cops, animals, etc) and I noticed it was easier to get to a "go directly to jail " velocity more quickly than before taking off the cover and relocating the IAT. No science to back that up though.

Some have pointed out their belief in the uselessness of CAI's (low, low, power gains ) while others expound upon their benefits. Others have also said the the engine bay is not a closed , air tight environment , and the temps there are not going to affect performance that much.

I dunno, I'm keeping it off as I just L-O-O-O-V-E the growl and inrush sound. Make's this 54 year old feel like he's back in the old days when he could stand up, look down , and see a part of his anatomy, instead of a gut

Oh well..., driving my R/T makes me feel young.

Dang it!! I'd be positively juvenile if I had a SRT!!

Yes. It doubles as the battery temp sensor on cars without. You PCM goes to a flat 13 to 13.5 volt level. Your battery will not go dead, but it will also not charge to the optimal voltage either. Kind of like limp mode for the alternator.

As far as under hood temps, on an N/A car, they will only be higher during city driving/not moving. At 60 mph, there is enough movement to keep them near ambient. Especially at the front. There wasn't enough difference that my butt dyno could tell between my SRI, and the air box with the elbow on. This was back when I had the stock TB. Either way, it didn't make enough difference I could tell. Put some ear plugs in, and compare.
