00Neon RCR's project log! Update: Map Clamp Tuning

Post by 00Neon RCR » Tue May 24, 2011 5:13 pm

Hey ladies and gents. So srtjesse was telling me I should have been doing a project log. I didn't really have the time to do so. However, after thinking about it and learning how much of an experience it has been, specially doing it all alone. I thought I would do one that way if anyone has any questions I may be able to answer them. I've learned quite a few things over the past few months that even others were shocked. If it was not for some of the great knowledgeable people within 2gn.org I would not have figured some of the things out myself. So let's start things off.

Car: ps2 2002 Chrysler Neon R/T

Suspension Mods: Tokico Illumina adjustable struts, Tein-S lowering springs (2" in the rear and 1.8" in the front)

Brake Mods: Slotted rotors and Monroe brake pads

Performance Mods: AFX/R from Howell Automotive, full SRT exhaust, AEM wideband, AEM cold air intake from Modern.

Interior Mods: Full srt interior minus the cluster, pedals and few other things

Exterior Mods: JSP OEM CF hood, wingless trunk, SRT rear bumper, 04 R/T front bumper with Mopar lip, custom painted tails to match body color, painted sides, and fake lip on rear bumper, 8000k HID headlights.

Electronics: Clarion VZ409 flip screen DVD player, Infinity Kappa series 6.5 door speakers and 6x9 rear speakers. 2x 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch HX2 Subwoofers, 2x Rockford Fosgate Punch 301m amps, Stinger cap, stinger 0/1 gauge power and ground wire. Custom built fiberglass sub boxes. Xbox 360, all wires hidden, Sirius connect for VZ409

NOW, the current/future plans...

Car: John Deere Green 2002 Chrysler Neon R/T

Suspension Mods: Tokico Illumina adjustable struts, Tein-S lowering springs (2" in the rear and 1.8" in the front) OR possibly stock SRT struts with my Tein-S springs.. this is still up in the air, my struts are blown.

Brake Mods: Slotted rotors and Monroe brake pads

Performance Mods:
1999 2.4T swap, 3" o2 housing, 3" SS AutoChrome exhaust, 3.55 trans, PT cruiser clutch, Mopar CAI, SRT cams, 2002 R/T ECU with AOBE map clamp, HKS SSQ BOV. AEM wideband.

Interior Mods: Full SRT interior minus the cluster, pedals and few other things. Front seats re-upholstered. Green cubby hole lights and green dome light; both purchased from LSP Designs.

Exterior Mods:
Painted JSP OEM CF hood, wingless trunk, SRT rear bumper, 04 R/T front bumper with Mopar lip, custom painted tails to match body color, 6000k HID headlights, 4300k HID fogs. Modern version 1 Black housing halo projector headlights. Green halos, green halo tinted projector fogs (Purchased from lilsparkplug).

Electronics: Clarion VZ409 flip screen DVD player, Infinity Kappa series 6.5 door speakers and 6x9 rear speakers. Sirius connect for VZ409, iPod cable for VZ409

Under the Hood Had my intake manifold, TB spacer, TB, thermostat housing, valve cover and cold air intake pipe all powdercoated John Deere green and yellow.

So, my car was suppose to be done in April but I became off work and onto a fixed income due to medical reasons. That being said, I kept getting things for and done to the car over that period of time. I'm coming to some of the final stages in my build. Well for the getting it running part. Then it's time for paint. I've done ALL the work myself and the only bit of help that I had physically by anyone was last week. Had a buddy and a half (He was half in the bag) help me place my engine and transmission into the car. Other than that, no one has helped me at all. Things that I have done throughout this process.

*Removed old baby motor and transmisison (Parted out).
*Got a 99 Chrysler Cirrus 2.4 and removed the engine from it.
*Picked up an 03 PT GT engine.
*Stripped both 2.4 engines.
*Honed out the 99 Cirrus block
*Checked crank for clearances (All were within spec)
*Replaced main/thrust bearings in block
*Replaced crank into block and sealed bedplate with Anaerobic sealer
*Used PT GT oil pump (Sealed with Anaerobic sealer)
*Replaced rod bearings and rod bolts on PT GT Pistons/Rods
*Installed PT GT pistons and rods
*Purchased a 2.4 DOHC head from a 01 PT cruiser (This was because I changed my mind on what intake manifold I wanted to use... went from 2.0 DOHC to SRT)
*Stock SRT intecooler
*Put new headgasket, checked bolts for stretching (Were fine)
*Put SRT cams.
*Mopar timing belt
*Mopar crank pulley
*Mopar AC delete pulley
*Mopar AC delete belt
*Mopar Belt tensioner
*SRT powersteering
*3.55 cable trans and swapped my 3.94 bellhousing onto it.
*Mopar release bearing
*PT Cruiser clutch
*SRT intake manifold
*New SRT dipstick tube
*Stock SRT turbo and manifold
*Mopar cold air intake
*New valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals
*New cam seals
*Cut front of rad support out for hot and cold side intercooler piping

Hey guys. Have no fire. Tried a different ECU and skim and still none. Tried 3 different coil backs. Still nothing. Lots of fuel being delivered. Just no igniting. What do I do? Is there a way to hook the coil up to direct power or what?

you have to swap around the injector wires and the coil pack wires

Make sure you are getting spark. You could have a bad crank or cam sensor throwing the ECU into not firing.

I didn't read every little bit of your post, but are you using the key that's mated to that drivetrain/PCM?

also, make sure the ground strap is secured between the engine and the car. i know it sounds stupid, but it's easily over looked

Ok. Swapped the wires on the coil pack. Swapped the injectors. Still nothing. Only code other than 1684 is 0106 (MAP sensor)

Would it be my crank sensor? Cause the coil drivers rely on the crank sensor. Could this be due to the fact I didnt swap my crank sensor from my 2.0 to my 2.4. Or would it matter? Also what about the cam sensor? I have rotated the magnet the 90 degrees. Please guys help me!

Sorry guys.

@Wiggy yes all are legit. My stock setup (I marked them when I took them out before. The other one I marked as well upon taking them out.

@Hudson yes I've sanded to bare metal on the strut tower and head. Placed a ground there. Sanded to bare metal for headlight grounds. Sanded to bare metal for the starter ground by fuse box. And starter ground to transmission. I believe that is all of them?

I'm almost certain it's the crank sensor and possibly the cam sensor as well. I'll try and get one of each tonight and try it.

Update: 2.4 and 2.0 crank sensors are the same part number. However the cam sensor is different from 2.0 and 2.4 as well as cannot use a cam sensor from any 2.0 newer than 98. Doesn't matter whether it's 2.0 SOHC or DOHC as long as it's 98 or older. I'm trying this theory tonight. Hoping it's the cam sensor and magnet I was using. Since both were a 2.4.

If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

By "legit" do you mean that the SRT key is the one that's being used to start the car?

If not, you need the key from the swap to start it. It just needs to be within an inch or so of the ignition switch to start the motor. Take off the column trim, zip tie the SRT key in there right next to the ignition, then start it up.

I don't think you understand what I'm using for a setup.

I'm using my stock 02 RT ECU, stock 02 RT ignition, key and skim module. My setup is not a true srt. It's still pre NGC.

Ok guys got the car started. For some reason I made the common CPS to coil and vice versa mistake. Silly me. However it will not start when the cam sensor is plugged in. And when it's unplugged it starts up but idles like a bag of shit. Is it the cam sensor for sure? Thats the only code that I'm getting other than my 1684 (typical) and the one for my RT intake manifold (expected).

Thanks for all your help guys.

Edit:

Here is a video of the first start. The crackling noise is due to the fact I didn't have my EGR block-off plate made up yet. It has now been fabbed up and installed. Hopefully I get a CPS tomorrow and it solves my idling issue. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks.

Alright guys. So had the car running after getting the "new to me" CPS. Was idling on it's own but RPM's were inconsistent. Give it a shot of gas and she would rev up significantly and be backfiring. Main thing is she was idling. Shut her off and wanted to start her again. Well never been more pissed about this car in my life.

Things I noticed wrong, in order.

*Fuel pump does not kick in.
*Turn key to start car and nothing happens. (As if tried starting the car without pressing the clutch.

Things I've done...

Checked all relays and fuses. All relays worked fine (tested in the horn spot). All fuses looked fine.

I was suggested to cross the jumpers for the fuel pump relay and the starter relay. Keeping the fuel pump one jumped. But releasing the starter ones. Will try this later this evening. Any other suggestions please leave them and I'll try them.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like an ASD circuit issue, but you said relays and fuses are all good. This is where I start throwing wrenches and cussing.

Oh trust me I was cussing. Not so much throwing wrenches around but definitely being a tad too angry and slamming stuff around.

Anyways just got home about an hour ago. I jumped those two relays right quick. Car will turn over. The pump stays on (not sure if that's just cause I'm jumping it or what) that being said, car has yet to start by jumping them. I'm going to check for fire later on tonight. Probably after the big game. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I've checked that. It looks dead on. I hand cranked the motor a bazillion times before installing it in the car. It all stayed "Perfect" The timing that I feel is "Off" is the cam magnet. I've rotated it, but may not have done it "Properly". Would the timing prevent the motor from turning over? It's working turning over when I "Jump" the relays but not by the key.....

Anyways guys, I just realized that back when I had my 2.0 Magnum in, I was upgrading my ECU and had purchased a AFX/R. However the day my AFX/R arrived I tried to plug it in and start the car, however Howell Automotive had not flashed my vin in it properley or I didn't send it to them properley. That being said when I plugged my factory ECU back in and start the car, the car ran like a bag of shit and pig rich and just completely horrible. Well, that happens to be the ECU I'm trying to use now, and possibly/probably one of the reasons I'm into problems now. It use to ALWAYS throw a CEL (Not sure the code now) but it also ALWAYS fouled up my o2 sensor (Upstream). Now my question is, I'm using a SOHC harness and a 2.4 Engine. I'm thinking of getting a different ECU. (Plan on going without SKIM). What options do I have for a ECU... (First Gen DOHC? SOHC? 00-02 SOHC? Any 2.4's? Take into consideration, I'm wanting something that will also work with my SRT throttle body sensors as well. Get back to me.

Hey guys, got the car turning over again. As well as the fuel pump kicking in. The problem was the 20 amp fuse in the PDC. Guess I should have checked those myself and not have a buddy do it. Anyways, all is said and done, however the car will not start now. It's getting fuel, turning over, battery is charged, just not getting any fire.... again. That being said, I did the "Key-Dance" and received a code that is related to the ASD (P1388). I replaced the relay with a working relay (Horn) and still nothing. What is going on? :(
