Headlight Restoration

Post by Alex Kurdian » Wed Jun 01, 2011 2:58 am

Hi All
I'm thinking about Headlight Restoration....however..if you look at my head lights they are Crystal clear...!

So why do I want to do this...well...at night when the light shines through you can see the sandblasting effect road wear and rain have caused...and it looks shit...but during the day its clear as! ...I'm just pedantic and thought why not...I wanna smooth the lens so that it looks nice at night....

so what do I use...? Wet sand and what grade? and then do i need to finish off with a polish or something?

Any help would be mad!

Ohh and not like these guys

3m makes a damn good product that pops into the end of a drill, however if you dont have a drill there's one by Turtle Wax that is pretty awesome for around $10 I think

I second the 3M one. I used it on 1gn head lights which where horribly yellow and they cam out as clear as can be.

Unless you clear paint them, they will turn yellow again. For 2gn headlights, sanding the pits out will be the only way, or lightly sand, and clear, then wet sand the clear smooth, filling in the pits/scratches. It will only last as long as the quality of the clear tho.

It was actually recommended to use a car wax with a SPF rating. For the main cause of the yellowing is ultraviolet rays. I hat yet to wax either set of head lights ive done

Sand with 1k and 2k wet and polish with some polishing compound and clear coated and it will turn out great.

Back when my sister had her old POS 1st gen, her headlights needed it BADLY, it was terrible to see at night with.

I wetsanded them and buffed them, they lasted for 3 years without any issue and she never washed the car, ever.

Finally ended up junking it and they looked just as good as they did when I wetsanded and buffed them.

1000, 1500, 2000. Drill with a "power ball" and some polishing compound. Did this for a friends mom. It is not perfect but its a hell of a lot better than before. A little more elbow grease and it would look mint.

My dad got this the other day. It supposed to be used before u apply rain x so it strips everything that is built up. Its kinda gritty and u just apply and let dry and rinse/wipe off it was unbelievable on my brothers 1gn head lights and turn lights and my mom stratus lights. was cheep and better than any of the other restoration kits ive tried.
