4 way flashers always trip fuse

Post by HazmatJeff » Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:43 pm

Whenever I hit the 4 way button it always blows the fuse for the directional lights and I lose them till I change the fuse.

What could be causing this?

Have you checked the connector for the MFS switch? It may be partially melted, or the switch it self may be the culprit.

How would I go about checking it?

do you have led bulbs in your turn signals and/or tail lights with "load equalizers" wired in to get rid of ricer flash? i know for a fact those things WILL blow fuses...

another possibility...have you ever replaced your flasher relay with anything other than a true oem unit from mopar? it looks like a standard SPDT relay, but it's far from it...this will also cause issues

Well it blew once then I put a fuse in that was rated either to high or to low and the relay started to smoke so I replaced it with after market one, not Mopar.

My tail lights are the Depo LED ones, but it's been doing that when I had my stock lights

if it happend when you had your stock tail lights on, then the problem is most likely a short to ground. maybe what OD said. best way to find it is to use an ohmmeter and check to see if your power wire has continuity with ground.

I guess if the flasher relay was specifically stated for the application, it shouldn't cause a short. To check the MFS connector, I believe you need to take the cover off of the steering column.

i agree, but he said the problem happened before he changed his lights and before he changed the flasher. i think it could be the MFS, but i also think it could be a power wire between the MFS and the bulb. only way to know is for the OP to tesst it.

The thing is, it only happens when the 4 ways are on. If it was in the wiring to a particular bulb, it would still short when that turn or brake light was powered. That is what makes me think it is something wirh the switch assy.
