progressive snapshot program ftw,,,

Post by cgneon » Fri Jul 01, 2011 2:59 pm

anyone else trying this little deal they have?

i have been with geico for years.. few months ago i was pricing other companies, and progressive got my business..

geico - 90$ a month full coverage w/ roadside

progressive 50$ a month full coverage w/ roadside

then they offer that snapshot i keep seeing commercials for. i said wtf i'll try it, Flow said it rocks! :P . they send a little device that plugs into your odb port and it tracks what time of day you drive, how many miles you drive, and how many times you brake harder than 7mph per second ( the last one is a bit of a pita ).

after the first month even with about a dozen hard brakes i got a 27% discount down to 36$ a month.. then you keep it plugged in until your policy renews, in my case 6 months. you can watch your discount fluctuate as it gathers data, and whatever your discount is at the time of renewal, thats your new premium ( your premium will not go higher than when you started though) , mail the thing back, and proceed to drive like a madman...

pretty nice deal if you can baby the brakes for a few months....

anyway im shootin for 35$ a month when im done in a couple months.... full coverage.. just sucks i gotta baby the car and drive like a grandma for a little while....

You can bet if it is monitoring the mph per second, it is monitoring the mph spectrum...

An MTX could help "cheat" it too, if all it does is kick in when the brake switch is made. Downshifting well before the brakes need applied will help. Of course in a true emergency, you are screwed. And it is held against you. Like non at fault accidents...

i dont think its the brake switch, i think it monitors the pcm just like my scanguage II does, and triggers whenever it sees the mph drop 7mph per second, regardless of cause, brake or engine braking.. good thinking though..

it does monitor your speed.. but doesnt use it to adjust discount..

Sounds like a pretty cool thing. So do u have to just drive with it until the policy renews and that's it for the next policy or do u have to constantly have it on the whole time. Like when we renew the policy it starts back up again. Me n my wife have progressive and if this thing could help save some money that would be great.

no its a 1 time deal.. when i signed up my premium was 300$ every 6 months (50$ a month) after the first 30 days with the device plugged in, your premium gets adjusted according to your discount, so i was refunded 14.50$ from the first month, and the rest of my payments went to 36.50$ for the next 5 months. as it gathers data on your driving habits, you can watch on the website your discount if it goes up or down. im at 29% now.. :) and when my 6 month policy comes due for renewal, the discount is applied, you mail the device back to them and your new premium is whatever it is for good, and you can go back to driving like a maniac. you do not have to do it for every renewal...

I was thinking about switching to Progressive myself to try out the Snapshot program. It looks fairly interesting. The fact that your policy can't actually increase is nice. The fact that it supposedly doesn't record mph is also nice.

it does record mph.. see graph above.. but it doesnt apply to your discount.. only time of day (high risk low risk times) and quick slowdowns.. which means to them, your probably tailgating..

but be warned 7mph per second is nothin.. i just learned to start braking gradually from way back.. its not a big deal, and i can live with it if it saves me a decent amount of cash..

Wow... When I had progressive a few years ago, they didn't have that. I got money back every time it was time for renewal, as long as I didn't have any incidents.

I have Progressive, I'll pass on the snap shot discount. I drive a lot and I need the ability to blast on on ramps, take random corners fast, and just simply have fun. I don't want a nanny in the car with me penalizing me when I want to have fun.. "Oh Noes, you braked too hard.. you're not getting a discount."

I'd never get a discount on my policy.

Same. I wouldn't say I drive wrecklessly. But I drive more "spirited" then an insurance company would like I'm sure.

I would take one of those to an autocross and see if they give me any sort of discount.

I would consider this. My 2 mile commute to work consists of 3 traffic lights. On some days I don't have to stop for any of them and the speed limit tops out at 35mph (25mph for 3/4 of it). I think I could get a discount.

The only time I can drive like I want to is when I take a trip somewhere (like Carlisle). There would be no discount if the snapshot was along for the drive. It would be funny if the device had a way to measure lateral Gs
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

well you can drive as fast as you want, that doesnt affect it at all.. all that goes into your discount is the amount of miles you drive, quick stops, and time of day. the one pic i posted above had the times for ( high/low/medium risk driving times(, and they compare you to the average driver stats i guess they compile for your area.. like the average driver has a 30minute commute, twice a day, running erands, going out on the town at night, etc... "i guess something like that"

i think most of my discount is lack of miles, i have a company vehicle for work, and i live literally across the street from work as well, so i am way below the average driver in my area

obviously since i am not on the road as much, i am less of a risk, so its easier for me to get the full discount... shit, im happy with 10%, anything less is always a good thing when it comes to bills.. but im shooting for the full 30%!!

The speed sensor doesn't work on fuzzy's car at all. He throws a code for no input.

However I think it's GPS rated. You'd still get a huge discount Fuzzy, as long as you don't mash the brakes lol.

well they said im good to go to return it, i guess they gathered enough data from me, so in the end i will be getting the 27% discount on my premium.

sux i was at 29% and couple weeks back i had to go to my g/f's grad ceremony from college which was 150miles round trip in one day. that dropped it to 27%.. fail..

ah well, 35$ full coverage works for me.... now i can finally plug my scangauge back in, i feel lost without it..
