Trans swap now p0551 code.....

Post by Caraudioholic24 » Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:04 pm

Ok...I finished the 5 speed trans swap on my 05 Sxt....Originally was an ATX. Drove fine for a bit. Twice now Ive gotten the power steering switch code....ok so I look under the car to see if I forgot to plug it in....jack up the car and look....NO Switch....I do howerev see two plastic cap off looking things that are threaded into the gear box...

Background....I have an 05 sxt5 speed trans and I redid all harnesses....pdc and engine...Everything is plugged in that I disconnected since I labeled everything. Also picked up an 05 sxt computer as well....

Now I noticed the Pdc harness does have the plug for the switch among a few others since it was for a car with abs but I dont have abs so my question is will pulling that cap off...installing a switch and plugging it in make the code go away?.... I guess with the car originally being an auto there was no need for the switch??....

Any help is appreciated since Carlisle is next week...I want to get all the bugs out...Thanks

I've had this code since i replaced my engine, but from what i understand the sensors apparently go out often on our cars  I'm going to be replacing my sensor tomorrow along with all the fluid in my power steering system.

Get a sensor, plug it in, and tuck it away. No more code.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Is the plug located towards the backside of the rack slightly below the lines? If so, that is where the switch is mounted. Installing the switch in the rack would be your best bet.

Im gonna tripple check that that plastic plug comes off and Ill go ahead ans do it..

I checked the sterering wheel when I turn left to right the car does not idle any differently...but it also doesnt bog down...Ill post up when I jack up the car

you should be able to just get the sensor for the type of harness you have. the threads are pretty universal when it comes to this part... maybe even the sensor, but regardless it is pretty easy to swap out, but you will need to drain your PSfluid.

Swapped mine out today and cleared the code... so far so good. Hope it stays that way.

Not 100% on what you mean by a plastic plug. If it in there to prevent dirt from getting into the rack assy, as in you bought a new rack and installed it. It will likely go flying out, the first time you really cranked the wheels.

If it is the original rack that has always been in the car, then I doubt the PS pressure switch is missing. It may not be connected, but it should be there. :)

Mike, if you can get some pics it will help clear things up, so we are on the same page.

Your PS will self drain as soon as the sensor is removed.

When I changed mine, I just had the new one ready, removed the old, and stuck the new in, being careful not to cross thread it. A little lost fluid is better than having to basically pull the rack assy to repair it.

If you want to change the fluid for fresh, just leave the catch pan under there, and wait a few minutes.

Just to clarify...the rack does not have a Sensor on it..LOL

Ill try and get some pics up tomorrow...the plastic cap off seem to be threaded into the gear box itself. From the dealer pictures Ive seen the sensor may possibly go where this plastic plug is threaded into. Im gonna grab a sensor tomorrow and see if the threads look the same.

The ONLY reason I have a plug for the sensor now is because I swapped out PDC harnesses so the 03 R/T that harness came off of had the switch. (it also has the abs wiring which Ive tucked away)

Im gonna jack up the car in the AM and confirm all of this.....If it seems to big of a job to attempt now Ill do it when I get back from Carlisle!!

Thanks for the help..Wasnt sure if this was an issue with any one elses swap. Must just be me. Something about 05 that they seemed to have changed a few things I guess.

I don't think tranny swap has anything to do with the P0551. It's just a normal wear out. Yeah it's just an unscrew and screw work, and a long socket adapter will probably make the life easier.
