Where was the Neon built?

Post by nerox » Mon Jul 11, 2011 3:35 am

I've always thought that the neon was made in the USA

but looking on wikipedia it says assembled in:

Belvidere, Illinois, United States
Toluca, Mexico
Valencia, Venezuela

Is there any way to tell exactly where your neon was built?

If you decode your VIN, you'll most likely see that it was assembled in Belvidere, Illinois, United States. Almost all of them are.

I thought for any car, you just need to know the first digit of the VIN?

1 = USA
2 = Canada
3 = Mexico
4 = USA
5 = USA
6 = Australia
9 = Mexico
J = Japan
K = Korea
S = England
T = Germany
V = France
W = Germany
Y = Finland, Sweden
Z = Italy

I only buy cars that start with "1."

Which rules out the neat little Fiat 500 I sat in at Carlisle... too bad.

I don't know how acurate that numbering system is. In the US, the second digit is manufacturers code. D=Doge, C=Chrysler, P=Plymouth, G=GM, F=Ford

It may be that were your list shows 1A it should read 1x, x=whatever manufacturer. May be true with other makes as well.

I see where it gives a range of A-10, but there can be only 1 character in the second position.

*Edit* I think I read it too quickly. It could be used as 11 (or any number in the second place as well) but I don't know that we have used them here yet.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
