Front Component Speakers

Post by carbuff105 » Tue Jul 12, 2011 4:03 pm

I know there are some threads about front speakers, but none of them have really answered the questions I have.

My front left door speaker is rattling so I want to get some new speakers. From what I understand the woofer in the door and tweeter in the dash are wired in parallel to make a 4 ohm impedance. Does that sound right? Does anybody know if they are both 8 ohm speakers? Is there already some kind of crossover setup somewhere?

I want to put in a component setup, but I don't want to tear everything apart to put the wiring in. Has anybody done this, and what did you do?

Any suggestions are welcome for what works, I don't need anything fancy or high end, just an improvement over stock.

Thanks

If I understand right, the crossover goes from the stereo and then branches out to the doors and dash. You can easily replace the speakers in both areas with no problems. You can find adapters for the speakers at Crutchfield.com.

both speakers to my knowledge are wired in parallel. the only thing not popping the tweeter/speaker up on the dash is a crossover built into the terminals. its a tiny capacitor.... both signals feed full range sound....as for impedance....a tweeter wont throw off impedence that much...but I forget what the stock fronts are... I will check tomorrow when I get home from work....

Does anybody have an old speaker or set of factory front door speakers that you could measure what the impedance is on them?

I just want to get some speakers that match them so I can keep everything the same and not dig into the tweeters in the dash. I assume they are just mid-range drivers and not coaxial speakers stock.

Thanks

I believe the door speakers are 4 ohms. I might be able to check the dash speakers later, if someone doesn't chime in first.

Edit: The factory dash speakers are not tweeters, just small speakers.

doors and tweets are 8ohms each, wired in parallel to make 4ohms on the system..

i said fuck it, ditched my tweets and got a nice set of 4ohm polk 6.5"s for the door and left it at that... it was easier than finding a set of components, to wire into the 4ohm 4channel headunit, since i'm not amped etc... well sub is amped, but thats diff...

edit:

oh and when i ripped mine out there was a crossover wired into the tweeter from what i remember seeing. and getting to the tweeter is very easy.. its 2 screws on either side of the dash, pop off the pillar covers, and push up the dash... ( i cant remember if you need to take out the 2 screws behind the center vents.)

so adding a component set is easy, as long as it is 2 8ohm speakers (door, tweet) , when i was looking, everything i found was 4ohm speakers... so wouldnt work, was hard to find 8ohm speakers like that, so hence i said fuck it and got nice speakers for the doors, and ditched the tweets..

Yeah you need to take out the vent screws also. I had to do it when I replaced the stock dash speakers for a set of kicker 3.5's

Actually the dash speakers are a little odd, Across the connector, they measure as an open circuit. Across the actual speaker, they measure 6 ohms. (5.9)

These do work. The capacitor must keep the resistance from being seen.

Yea the capacitor only allows high frquency to enter the speaker so it wont blow it.....

that being said having those hooked up to the door speakers will not affect the impedance but by a very small margin...same goes for like an aftermarket component set... so let me check my door speakers once more to be positive on the ohms for you
