Ah, so when you get codes, you don't get a CEL. Possibly the light is burn't out. The engine icon should light up each time you key on.
Like this, except the gauges would be at rest.

Certain codes will not turn it on.

Only the (M) codes should light it up.

CEL = Check Engine Light. It illuminates on the dash, generally accompanied by a chime to alert the driver. This occurs when a particular vehicle system has a fault that is deemed critical by the PCM. This pretty much means the engine and it's direct components, and all emissions components. There are certain times when a code may be set in the PCM that does not register a CEL on the dash. These codes relate to equipment that is not critical to the performance to the engine or emissions system, i.e. cluster codes, speed sensor codes, etc. To check if your CEL and chime works, unplug a few sensors (MAP/TPS/CPS should do), it should come on almost immediately. Simply plug them back in and reset the battery to get rid of the light. I think this answers your questions Alex.

The MAP or TPS are the easiest, and you only need to key on for the light to stay on. (sensor still unplugged) No starting needed. The coil could be unplugged, but cranking may be necessary to get a code.
Good thinking Derek.
Edit: Alex, don't let the wifey see you !

gtxtreme19 would it be possible to run a dual alternator setup by using the stock alternator location and a 2.4 front mount?

yes sir I am . I have been debating performance vs Audio . I know nothing about being fast but alot about audio . If I can run dual alternators I could run 2x 250 amp alternators to power a 6k watt rms system . Im just weighing all my options

I guess I'm the opposite, the only audio mod in my car is a quality Pioneer head unit. The rest of the audio comes from the car itself
Just bear in mind, adding weight to these cars is the best way to negate performance gains. Just having passengers makes my car feel like I'm pulling a boat. I couldn't imagine having 200lbs of subs and shit, AND passengers!

I don't see where it wouldn't work, might have some trouble figuring out belt routing and wiring, but as far as it bolting up that'd be easy

What a strange place for a CEL to be.

Mine is above the gas gauge. Having it more in the center would make it easier to see...which can be a good thing and bad

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
