manual steering rack installed

Post by thump3r » Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:45 pm

so i picked up my steering rack yesterday. and installed it last night.

i was lucky enough to have the original bushing mount and knuckle come with mine.

the rack is out of a 95 neon.

i wanted to keep the install as simple as possible. where other guy s have built a 3/4" plate to mount the unit on. i discovered it wasnt needed.

i used 3/16 plate and made a direct bolt in plate for the passenger side. i also measured to make sure the rack was sitting exactly centered compared to the original rack. as it turns out the left front bolt is in place. the other 3 need to be adapted to fit. i also built another plate to raise the right side up equally.

the K I S S worked great in this case as the knuckle lined up into the column no problems. where others found them 3/4 to short. mine seems to be maybe 1/4" short if that but i bolted it together and there lots of shaft holding it together. but to be safe i tack welded them aswell.

heres a terrible pic but gives you an idea.

also for those that car its over 22lbs weight savings

this wasn't allot of work at all. any one that can take a few measurements and drill a few holes the can do it. it took me 3 hours in all dropping the sub frame. and mounting the rack.

the hardest part is finding a manual rack. i still have to put a set of new tie rods on and align the front.

You got better pics of the rack mounted to the sub frame?

Edit: This is how I have eye balled the (power) Shadow rack, which is supposed to be the same as the 1gn rack, except for the inner tie rods.
