SRT engine. Good deal?

Post by th3magpi3 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:51 pm

Ive got a local guy offering me a 2.4 turbo engine from a pt for 500$ with 70 000 km's (43 xxx miles) on it, and a rebuilt head. But the engine needs a new crankshaft as well as a new turbo. However he is also including an rt tranny as well as the wiring harnesses and computer. What do you guys think? is it to much of a task to replace the crank? I know the turbo will be easy as hell I just dont have a lot of experience with engine work. Thanks.

What exactly is wrong with the crank, broken in two? Has it been removed and the block inspected for damage? If you're not experienced with engine work, if may be over your head, especially if you want it done 100% correctly. An 3.94 T-350 tranny isn't a good idea for three reasons. One, a non SRT clutch can't hold the power of the 2.4T. Two, an SRT clutch requires machining to fit in a T-350. Lastly, the T-350 tranny itself is not designed for the extra 100hp and will likely live a very short life. Oh and fourth, no LSD.

Doesn't sound like a very good deal....

Maybe if you were a mechanic with a lot of engine work experience...

Not to sure about the problem with the crank. I will be going to take a look either tonight or tomorrow after work so I'll find out all of the details then. I've taken apart engines before I'm just not sure how difficult this one would be. So you would just recommend that i purchase an srt tranny? Im swapping it into an 03 sxt if thats any help to you.

Yes SRT engines are best used with T-850 SRT trannys.

Whether it's even worth considering depends completely on the condition of the bottom end.

My guess is, if both the turbo and crank are damaged, it was from lack of oil. Prolly more that is wrong than is advertised/known.

sound similar to what happened to my engine but much worse, which pretty much makes it $500 paper weight. especially if the turbo is bad too.

Yeah, I'd definitely pass on that offer. I cringed when I read the crankshaft and turbo needs to be replaced.

Bingo. Oil was my first thought.

As far as needing the SRT trans, there are many people on here that will assure you that is not the case (esteinmaier being one of them - check out his car). OB is right about not being able to use the SRT clutch, but the T350 is one strong mother of a transmission, plus they don't have the 3rd gear problems found in the T850. Also, not all T850's have LSD either. The R/T trans would work fine, but with the amount of torque that the 2.4 turbo makes, the 3.94 might just turn into lots of wheelspin :) .
