Mopar Spray Paint: How Good Is It Really?

Well went down and saw my buddy at the body shop to see how much it would cost to paint my car if I didn't want to do it. The quote he gave me was $2,000. I wasn't in shock like he thought I might of been in. From doing auto body for a living I know it can be expensive. I was wondering if anybody has used the OEM Mopar spray paint that you get from the dealer and how good is it really on matching up. I have read some reviews online and people seem to like it and say it matches up prefect. I would like to know if anybody here has used it and if it has matched and blended prefect or at least ok. Pictures would be great if you have them. Please feel free to comment. Thanks

ask ohnoa2.0, he sprayed the mopar spray paint on his car. he has a pr4 red 2gn. i saw it myself, it looks decent but unless you're doing the whole car like that you will be able to see a bit of difference.

ya I was thinking of using it on my bumpers and fenders. Just want to know if anybody had used it and if it actually matches up close or not.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. If I get the srt rear bumper, I was going to paint it Mopar black to match the rest of the car.

ya thats what I want to do for right now, plus you always can tell new paint from old paint. I just dont want to pay big bucks right know for bumper and fenders. On the trunk I am just on to get one from the salvage yard and same with the doors.

While you are at the JY. Would you mind checking for an srt-4 power steering cap? It is the 6 sided one instead of the standard. I have looked around here and every neon here has been raped.

I've used it a few times and its very good, the problem with painting any red car is sun fade, it makes matching new paint nearly impossible.

ya I will check but we dont have alot of SRT 4s around here. Thats one thing I like is about silver is it fades but I haven't seen were it fades that bad.

As with any paint, the key is prep. Rattle can can look great if the prep is done properly and the spray is coated well. People knock rattle can paint because idiots just spray them over things with very little prep or no prep at all minus simply using some soap to remove grime.

You will need degreaser, microfiber clothes, and I highly recommend sanding. Though I used an actual spray gun for my fenders, I have rattle canned parts of the car but prepped it properly and after a few coats of clear, you can't tell a difference between the actual paint gun panel and pieces of done with a can.

why? at 8 bucks a can it would cost you a lot more to rattle can it than you would think, and then you are still dealing with a solvent based, thin and un-durable coating. do it right the first time

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Mopar touch up is made by DupliColor. Not only would it be cheaper to buy it from a parts store rather than through a dealer, you may be able to get a larger size can through them. The dealer only offers a 5oz can.

If you need PS2 silver, it is available in a 8oz can. Part #BCC0410 Should run around $7.00 a can.

So then if I got it from PepBoys, it would be Chrysler black then? I think that is the way they have their paints set up.

You can buy the paint in the spray can or for an spray gun. They give you options when buying the paint. You can get it so its ready to spray or you can mix it your self. They also make the paint when you order and don't have it sitting on the self. Let me know what you think.

This is where I get all my stuff for my spray gun...clear, base, primer, etc. I've had fantastic results. I've done my fenders, my front bumper and my rear bumper. I'm contemplating re-doing the entire car next but am not sure yet.

I used the mopar paint on my eyelids and grille trim on the SXT, it's not a 100% match but it's super close.

I just redid my grill inserts with a spray can from that website. The paint (after extensive clearcoat) looks great. It is a very close match. I will post pictures in a bit. You definitely need to prep it though, and the inserts are a much smaller area so its easy to achieve a nice result vs. a large bumper.

I painted the spot under my hood and my intake tubing both with the electric blue spray paint cans from the dealer. It was an exact match and with some clear on the intake tubing looked really amazing.

If you are going to paint the bumpers, you need paint with a flex additive or the paint will just spider, crack and flake off when handled or bumped.

Tho if it is sanded and primered, it may still crack, but may not fall off nearly as bad.

This is what a piss poor prep job looks like:

After a car wash

No sanding was done, no primer was used. The up side is I got the complete fascia re painted. The insurance only quoted painting half.

Ok bring this thread back. I have to cans of the mopar spray paint from the dealer. I have to paint my front lip and was wondering what some of you thought about using this paint on it.

If you prep it right, use adhesion promoter, sand the surface well and follow up with clear coat you should be fine

Its been body washed and have some sealer put on in one area were I sanded down.

so what the general idea is the dealerships (and part stores) sell rattle can versions of our auto body paint and the application of it does not look that bad if you prep it right and do all the work required for painting.
