Mopar Short Throw Shifter

Post by Jillustre » Fri Aug 26, 2011 9:40 am

Hi!

I just install a Mopar Short Throw Shifter on my 2gn 05 and I was wondering if I could damage the transmission with this short throw shifter hard/fast shifting?

thanks!

No. As long as you installed it correctly you shouldn't have any problems. That's why it's a Mopar piece.

It's possible, I don't know if the mopar shifter has a rod brake on it, if it doesn't you should either trade up to a Maddog STS or have him retrofit your shifter with the brake. Rod Brakes keep the shifter from over extending the cables and/or eliminates extra force on the transmission when you shift by limiting its travel. Rule of thumb, dont shift fast/hard everywhere you go, save it for when you are racing. No need for it in everyday driving...

If I remember correctly, the Mopar STS does not have rod-brakes, but the shifter still uses the pivot ball case as a rod-brake to stop you from over shifting. The reason the Maddog shifters use rod-brakes is because the reduction is so much that the shifter no longer uses the case as a stop point.

Like Jeff said, it is a mopar piece, should be fine, all in how you drive it....

These are rod brakes, you can see you just adjust them so that the shifter can fully engage the gear but not go any further than that, it stops the rod from traveling beyond proper gear engagement:

Jeff, I didn't realize that, good info!

So It would be safer to get the maddog one?

it would be safer to not rip through the gears every day like you're in fast and the furious. if you're building a drag car, yes. go with the maddog. if you're just wanting a shorter throw, the mopar is fine as well. i've had mine in my car for 5 years now and i've done my fair share of spirited driving

Thanks Hudson_Neon...

I just receive it from modern performance and install it yesterday... and I was afraid for the transmission...but you secure me!
