proportioning valve / gasket kit... where to find, etc..

Post by cgneon » Fri Sep 02, 2011 4:01 pm

looks like i have a leak i have to finally take care of. i noticed it was wet before, when i was troubleshooting my low brake fluid.. which turned out to mainly be my rear drum wheel cylinder.. kk.. did rear disc swap, solved problem, forgot about the wet seal on the valve..

couple months or so later, i get the infamous low brake "ding" leaving work yesterday.. panicked, walked around and checked all 4 corners.. no leaks..

so the culprit has to be the proportioning valve gasket.. the brake line going directly from the bottom of it.. "drivers rear brake tube" the gasket is swelled and seeping fluid.. you can see the whole brake line is wet from it slowly dripping and following the path down, and dripping on the steering column....

question... where can i get a gasket kit for it, or do i need new proportioning valves? if so where do i get those? i see nothing listed on rockauto and google thinks im retarded aside form one random ebay listing..

or is it dealer only?

i guess i could always hit up the junkyard..

5015181AA VALVE, Proportioning $54.70

Brakes - Hydraulic system - Pressure metering valve
Pressure metering valve, neon, all, w/o abs 2000 - 2005

I know the MC I got from Rock Auto came with the proportioning valves installed. I got it for $50ish. Just sayin'.

Or you could get the whole MC with them from a JY, and hope it's still good.

Hmm. All the MC on rockauto didn't have them pictured. That's why I got stumped.

Yeah it doesn't show them on the one I bought either. I was actually surprised to see them.

Sometimes bleeding goes smoothly, sometimes it can be a small PITA. The one thing the MC did not come with was the bench bleeder hoses that you thread into the ports, so the fluid can be routed back to the reservoir.

Not sure on these style tho, as I have not installed the MC as I am waiting on other parts from a ebay seller that is dragging his feet on shipping. (Prolly going to have to file a Pay Pal claim) :banghead:

It did bleed easily when I replaced the brake booster, but it was already in use. You have to remove the MC to get the booster out, there is no bending the lines enough to get it past it. Basically it gravity bled at the connections. Hopefully a new one is as easy.

You may want to call them to verify tho.

Yeah, on the old school master cylinders you put the two hoses in the ports, and the ends into the reservoir, clamp it in the vise, and manually pump it to get the air out.

But these have 4 ports...

hmm, new MC same one you got is 65shipped from rockauto..
junkyard would be 40$ish for a used setup

or 9$ if i just buy the 1 proport valve..

may just spring for new... so at least i know its all new :P
